Songs with a Girls Name in the Title

Kyra Lennon
Women have long been muses for male lyric writers. This is clear by the sheer amount of songs with girls names in the title. If you look deep into the lyrics of most songs, love in some form is the inspiration, but the following artists have gone a step further, using the name of their muse as the name of their track! The following is a small selection of the many songs with girls names in the title.

1) "Laura" - Scissor Sisters

Laura is one of the early releases from the camp, sparkly band the Scissor Sisters. It is one of the more bizarre songs with a girls name in the title and speaks of asking "Laura" to give him a second chance to be the man he knows he is. It isn't so strange until the line, "this will be the last time I ever cut your hair"! It's a great track though - one of Scissor Sisters finest!

2) "Sherry" - Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons

Naming songs after women happened a lot more in previous decades when romance and wooing the object of your desires was more common, as opposed to getting them drunk and stumbling home for a quickie which seems to be the current trend! Sherry was released in 1962 and is about a man trying to get his girl to go out for the evening. Simple song, but very effective!

3) "Proud Mary" - Ike & Tina Turner

Proud Mary is one the most energetic songs in the history of music. It is almost impossible not to feel happy on hearing it. It was originally recorded by Creedence Clearwater Revival but Ike & Tina Turner made it exceptionally popular.

4) "Sweet Caroline" - Neil Diamond

Sweet Caroline is not only one of the most well known songs with a girls name in the title, it is a karaoke favourite! Sweet Caroline is a classic love song describing how good things are with Caroline in his life.

5) "Chelsea Dagger" - The Fratellis

Catchy is not the word to describe Chelsea Dagger - it would need a whole other word that has yet to be invented! The song was released in 2006 and was named after Jon Fratelli's wife, show stage name was Chelsea and is also a play on the name of Britney Spears.

6)"Hey There, Delilah "- Plain White T's

Hey There Delilah is another of the more recent songs with a girls name in the title. Released in 2005, Hey There Delilah is simply a song about a girl band member Tom Higgenson was interested in. It became one of the most popular songs of the year!

7) Come On Eileen - Dexy's Midnight Runners

One of the biggest songs of the eighties, Come on Eileen is a well known track (and hated by my mum whose name is Eileen!) with words that are virtually indecipherable! But as long as you know "toora loora toora loora ay" and "Come on Eileen", you'll fit right in with everyone else!

8) "Lola" - The Kinks

A comedy song that must have been quite shocking for it's time - Lola is pretty much about a transvestite. The lyrics detail a night when a man meets a good looking woman in a bar, only to realise she is really a man! Classic Kinks!

9) "Wake Up Little Susie" - The Everly Brothers

This is a great song about a young boy taking his girlfriend out on a date to a movie, but the movie is boring, they fall asleep and miss their curfew. The song then goes on to speculate about how their parents will react and what they will think.

10) "Maggie May" - Rod Stewart

Maggie May was allegedly written based on an experience Rod Stewart had with a woman when he was a young man. This song tells a man's pain on being used by a woman who dumped him when she had got what she wanted. It's very unusual to hear a song of this nature from a male perspective!

I love Lola. :P It's funny that it became so popular, but there are still a lot of people who never really "got it". Now I'm singing it to myself. :P

    Great list!

Great idea for an article. A few more off the top of my head: Layla - Derek and the Dominos, Sylvia - Focus, Joanna - The Equals, Valerie - Steve Winwood, Oh Carol - Neil Sedaka, Deborah - T. Rex, Dianna - Paul Anka. The list is endless.
