Songs About Money: Which Songs Are All About the Benjamins?

Many Artists Have Made Money Singing About Money

D. S. Ploshay
Some folks say the music industry is just about the money. With so many songs about money, these folks could be on to something. Here is a look at some songs from the past few decades which are about getting rich-or the problems with getting rich.

"I Wanna Be Rich," by Rich Calloway
I remember singing along with this as a kid in the 80s for a few reasons. One, it was catchy. Two, I had aspirations of being rich, like any other poor kid. Sing it with me: "I want money, lots and lots of money...."

"If I Had a Million Dollars," by the Bare Naked Ladies
As I grew, my desire for money turned to a new song by the totally fun band, The Bare Naked Ladies. "If I Had a Million Dollars" is a total sing-a-long song with some extremely funny lyrics. I mean, gourmet ketchups? Good stuff. Also, this song is probably one of the biggest karaoke songs to date.

"Take the Money and Run," the Steve Miller Band
This was a classic feel-good song from the late 70s, and still a popular hit on classic rock radio. This song is from the days when songs had stories. "Take the Money and Run" was a sort-of Bonnie and Clyde story where two young lovers steal some money and then go on the run.

"Money for Nothing," by the Dire Straits
This song was from the early MTV days, with a totally cool video (for those days.) You know the song, "...money for nothing and chicks for free...."

"Bills, Bills, Bills" by Destiny's Child
Not that these ladies had to worry about making those payments during their heyday, but the song "Bills, Bills, Bills" surely was due for success. The song was about a freeloading man who ran up debt for a lady. Not too cool, right? But a catchy song nonetheless.

"Gold Digger," by Kayne West
This extremely contagious song is probably the most recent radio smash hit about the almighty dollar. Going along with the above Destiny's Child tune, Kayne West's "Gold Digger" is about a woman who's only into her guy for the bling bling. The song really had a good beat and was fun to listen to.

"Mo Money, Mo Problems," by Notorious B.I.G.
I didn't want to include a rap/hip-hop song on the list because, well like a country song being about leaving and loving and drinking, many songs of this genre are about money. But, oh well. This song's title definitely is the truth.

"Rich Girl," Gwen Stefani and Eve
Okay. I personally thought this song was super annoying. Never liked it. But, it was still a popular song and deserves to be on the list. But how obvious-"If I was a rich girl, I'd have all the money in the world...." I think it is pathetic songwriting.

"She Works Hard for the Money," Donna Summer
A classic hit about money from the disco queen herself. A nice tribute to the hardworking girl.

Other songs about money:
"Money Talks," AC/DC
"Money," Pink Floyd
"Money Changes Everything," Cyndi Lauper
"The Big Money," Rush

The above are just a sampling of some of the most recognized money songs. I am sure you can think of more- feel free to comment below.

are you kidding me? "Rich Girl" was not written by Gwen Stefani. it's a classic song, from a classic Broadway show, Fiddler On The Roof. she just took it and "rapped" it up.

There was an elderly woman in my neighborhood when I was growing up who always walked around singing "I Ain't Got a Barrel of Money."
