Songs For A New Year's Party or Playlist

It only seems like yesterday since 2008 began. Now we are headed toward 2009 as 2008 winds down. New Year's has an interesting history. Did you know there was no month of January until 700 B.C? The old New Year's day began on March 15 or the Ides of March. It made since to start the New Year in the Spring. Today, New Year's festivities are much tamer than ancient civilizations. It is celebrated with parties and music. If you need a few songs for your New Year's party or play list, here are some suggestions.

"It's My Party" Lesley Gore

Bring a touch of nostalgia to your New Year's part or play list with this cute party tune. Baby boomers will especially remember this classic number one from 1963. Lesley Gore was only 17 when she sang about a girl being humiliated by her boyfriend at a party.

"I Will Survive" Gloria Gaynour

Many of us faced tough economic times in 2008. Fore closures were on the rise, companies needed bailouts, and gas prices soared. This disco tune will remind everyone they can survive no matter what.

"New Sensation" INXS

The word new comes to mind at the approach of anew year. A song about the partying lifestyle couldn't be more suited for your New Year's party. Who can forget "Live, baby, live until the night is over"?

"New Attitude" Patti Labelle

Perhaps you have forgotten about this R & B tune from the 1980's by Patti Labelle. A few of us need to start 2009 with a positive attitude. Add it to your play list or play at your New Year's party as motivation.

"Hazy Shades of Winter" Bangles

First released in 1976, the Bangles did a cover in the 1980's. Their version is bit more jazzier than the original. It makes an ideal tune since New Year's takes place in winter. You can play the original, too.

"Tequila" The Champs

Tequilas are popular drinks served at parties. If you plan to serve them at your New Year's party, play this fun classic. Even if you don't serve alcohol, you can play it anyway. It will definitely get everyone moving.

"Choices" George Jones

George Jones sings about making a recovery from alcohol addiction in "Choices." A new year means making new choices. Hopefully, they will be good ones. If anyone you know or yourself suffers from addiction, make the choice to quit in 2009.

"Don't Dream It's Over" Crowded House

I don't what Crowded House meant by this song but I like it. There are varying opinions over its meaning. Some say it is about trading a new life for an old one and others say it is about freedom. Either way, it goes with New Year's. Maybe freedom from debt , freedom from bad luck, or a new life lies ahead in 2009.

Don't forget about Auld Lang Syne at your New Year's party. Some other notable songs include "New Year's Day" by U2 and "What are You Doing New Year's Eve?" just to name a couple. The songs I listed should be plenty to keep guests entertained or your Playlist full. Have a safe and happy New Year's.
