Interested in becoming a songwriter? Sure you can piece together words that rhyme, however; do you have what it really takes to be a creative songwriter? The art of songwriting is one that can be quite difficult to master. Having the right thoughts about a theme of a song is not enough to make you a complete songwriter, taking those thoughts you have and coming up with a creative way to express them thru words, will set you apart from everyone else.

Brainstorming Your Ideas

If you are new to songwriting, you must remember to brainstorm ideas before trying to compose a song. The pros can simply take their ideas and know the proper format to place them in for a song to flow smoothly, however, if this is your first time, take it step by step by jotting you thoughts down on paper. Decide what it is you want the song to be about, how you want people to react to your song and if you're doing it for fun or to make some serious profit off of it. If you are planning to market the song to make profit from it, you may want to stick to a subject that you hear a lot or one that's popular among the crowd of people you're aiming for.

Be a Creative Songwriter

Sure there are many songwriters that say words straight out without making the listener think to hard, however, you may want to try a different approach to songwriting by being extra creative with your words. Try using similes or metaphors instead of being straight out blunt with your lyrics. If you're having trouble finding original words that no one else has used, try looking in the thesaurus to help you out. When writing songs, think "outside of the box", this means don't stick to what you see everyone else doing, put your own spin on it. Sticking to writing the same ol' basic lyrics will result cause you to be "classified", with a list of other un-original songwriters. When writing lyrics, make sure that they flow, whether writing them to a beat or just from the top of your head, make sure to say your lyrics with flavor so you know how the song will really sound. A lot of beginners make the mistake of writing a song, but not performing the song to see how it sounds. If you want the song to be exactly as you wrote it, tweak the lyrics here and there and try different styles of saying the words.
