I've never been much for the fancy brunches to honor mothers on Mother's Day. So this year, when we found ourselves at Sonny's Pizza in Henniker, New Hampshire, I was thrilled. Now, eating on the road, when you're out traveling, can be risky business. So we found ourselves de-ramping the highway in search of a Sunday meal. But not just any Sunday, it was my special day, my Mother's Day.

Before you begin thinking, how elegant is Mother's Day in a pizza joint, stop to consider what really matters when you're eating out. Good food? Sure. Pleasant atmosphere? Definitely. Expensive ticket? Certainly not.

Turning onto Main Street in Henniker, we followed the road as it paralleled the Contoocook River. The kids spotted the pizza sign first and, knowing I too enjoy a good pizza pie, we pulled into the curb side convenient parking.

In just five minutes we were drinking ice cold draft and lemonade while enjoying the sound and scenery of the only river to actually run north. That's right, the Contoocook River runs north until it intersects with the Merrimac River in Concord, NH (the state's capital).

Sonny's Pizza dining room is large with many booths and tables. The bar stretches the length of the dining room providing easy access to anyone looking for a refill. To ease congestion on those busy evenings (Henniker is also a college town) Sonny's has a comfortable waiting area for take out customers.

And finally, what would any good restaurant be without competent and friendly wait staff? Well, a bad restaurant, I guess. Sonny's is one of the good ones. Our order was taken right away, but only after the waitress answered all our questions. The food was delivered right to our table (orders are taken at the counter) and everything was hot and tasty.

Henniker has a lot to offer - education, alpine skiing, water sports - all in close proximity to bigger places like Concord and Manchester. Did I like celebrating Mother's Day in a college town? Sure. Did I find my experience and my meal totally satisfying? Absolutely. And would I go back? See you there next Mother's Day.

I'm glad that you liked Sonnys. It used to be called MSP by the local kids short for Mainstreet Pizza and long before then it was known as Louis Pizza. I think the current owners are the best and they genuinely care for their business and quality of food and so on and so forth. As a local, I'm glad that you liked Sonny's. I might go there for lunch today.
