Sonoma County Harvest Fair in California

Sonoma County is in the heart of California's wine country, so it makes sense that the Sonoma County Harvest Fair is a festival that focuses on the grape harvest and on wine. But there is more to the Harvest Fair than just wine; from micro-brew beer tasting to face-painting, you'll find something for everyone in the family at this annual three-day September fest.

Friday starts the Harvest Fair off with wine varietal flight tasting for those over 21, from noon until early evening. At the same time, there are apple variety tastings for kids, along with a beekeeping demonstration and honey tasting, a hay maze, livestock exhibitions, and the opening display of fair entries, including crafts, baked goods, produce, pottery, and more, along with plenty to purchase. Sonoma County is warm in September, so stay comfortable in cute capris and sandals, and carry a large tote like this "Sophia" from Dakine.

Friday continues with the qualifying round of stomping for the World Championship Grape Stomp. People come from all over the world to compete in teams of two: a stomper and a swabby (who keeps the juice flowing). It's open to all ages, with a special stomp on Sunday for kids 13 and under. Teams are encouraged to wear team gear, like matching tee shirts or silly hats, so it's just as much fun to watch this as it is to stomp.

Later that evening, put on a pretty dress that's cute but not overly formal, and head for the Art Reception. Enjoy different wines and light appetizers while checking out the harvest-themed artwork that have been entered in the fine art categories.

Throughout Saturday and Sunday, there's a carnival for kids of all ages, fun with livestock including pig races, a llama parade each day, and a sheep dog competition. For the adults, the wine tasting continues. On Saturday afternoon beer lovers can rejoice at the micro-brew tasting. You'll want to stay until Sunday, when the fair entries are awarded their ribbons, and most importantly, when the grape stomp has its final round, and the World Champions are named.
