Sonopuncture: What is It? How Does it Work? What is it Used For?
Alternative to Acupuncture for Overweight Patients, Athletes, Children & the Elderly
Sonopuncture is the use of sound vibrations on acupuncture points instead of needles.
Wikipedia's definition states, "Sonopuncture is a stimulation of the body similar to acupuncture, carried out by using a narrow, cylindrical high frequency beam of sound instead of needles."
Sonopuncture is also known under the trademarked name "Acutonics" (sound healing) or phonophorese. Sonopuncture is quite similar to acupuncture, and can be used in the same way, though less invasive, and if used by a skilled and trained professional who employs the principles of Traditional Chinese medicine. It is a better alternative to acupuncture especially when treating people who are highly sensitive, needle-phobic, children, elderly or those that are very weak. Most people like the sensation of the sonopuncture sound head, or even the use of tuning forks on acupuncture points, and find it relaxing, soothing and enjoyable. Sonopuncture can be a big help when treating children and can be a particularly useful treatment in pediatrics because of it's non-invasive and gentle techniques.
How does Sonopuncture work?
The quartz crystal in the 'sound head' vibrates from the rapidly changing electrical currents applied across the facets of the crystal which generate the ultrasound beam that is directed to the acupuncture point for short periods of time (about 15-45 seconds). The ultrasound wave can penetrate the skin about 6-8 cm, and is conductive through fat tissue without absorption, so the target muscles (where most acupuncture points are) can be treated. This is good news for people with a lot of fat tissue that do not gain much effectiveness in the acupuncture treatments.
Most effective are high frequency sound waves of 750 to 1,000 kHz (or 750,000 to 1,000,000 cycles per second) or greater, and the frequency of ultrasound used in sonopuncture is one megahertz; vibrating at a million times a second.

Although there is still speculation on the effects of sound therapy techniques (including sonopuncture, acupuncture and the like) by the traditional medical community, it does show promise in the alternative medical field since it isn't invasive and creates a soothing effect on most people. It seems a viable resource for those whom other treatments have not helped or can not help, including overweight patients, children and the elderly.
