Sony Bravia KDL-46NX800 Review: HDTV with Built-in Wi-Fi

Allow me to present the Sony Bravia KDL-46NX800, another HDTV from Sony that has its good points and bad. It has LED backlighting, but it's really not the most awesome among other LED backlighting I've seen. The Sony Bravia KDL-46NX800's LCD backlighting seems not to be any more spectacular than its competitors, like the Samsung UNB700. Those who want the very best in LCD HDTVs need to look elsewhere.

There are other ways in which I can't complain about the Sony Bravia KDL-46NX800. The outside of the TV is completely remodeled. It almost looks otherworldly with the new design, called the monolithic style. All the internet services Sony offered back in 2009 are on the Sony Bravia KDL-46NX800, but it now has built-in Wi-Fi. It is definitely very well-made, and we can applaud Sony for the unusual effort.

Everything about the Sony Bravia KDL-46NX800 breathes sleekness, and this thin HDTV is dominated by its smooth glass screen, which reaches almost to its corners. The black metal of the screen blends nicely with the silver stand and the different pieces of the Sony Bravia KDL-46NX800 go well together. You don't even have to look at the Sony logo if you don't want to; it can be turned off.

Overall, using the Sony Bravia KDL-46NX800 HDTV isn't difficult. Every widget, internet service, input and setting can be manipulated without frustration because everything's logically arranged and you have a superb user interface. A customizable display would be nice, where you could decide what to show. That would eliminate the cluttered screen. Navigation, though, is so good that we almost feel like we're using a PS3.

We have to recognize Sony once again since they have worked to improve the memory scheme for the Sony Bravia KDL-46NX800's picture. You can take specific settings and save them as a scheme, then you can apply it to whatever you want. The seven Scene modes include some we've found quite useful, like Cinema, PC and Game. Too bad you can't get to them through the main menu.

Another thing you can do with the new interface is take settings from more than one mode and use them across different scenes. It's complex enough for those who live their whole lives adjusting the TV screen, as some of you will be happy to hear, while there are the presets for people who just want to sit down and enjoy their TV.

The pickiest people won't be overly excited about the Sony Bravia KDL-46NX800's picture quality and it's definitely not a budget piece of equipment, but it is very well-designed and it has all the features you could ask for. The Sony Bravia KDL-46NX800 is definitely a high standard that few HDTVs, even others with LED backlights, have met.
