Sony is a name in which I place much trust and loyalty when it comes to electronics. Over the past decade, nearly every television, vcr, dvd player, and stereo we have purchased has been a Sony. When the time came to buy a digital camera, Sony was the obvious choice. Of course, as with all electronics purchases, it is still best to research and compare all available items. We looked online at several comparison sites and even checked Consumer Reports; the DSC-P20 got excellent reviews.
As for price, it was very inexpensive. It was under $200 to purchase new a while back. For an entry level camera, this isn't too bad a deal. When you factor in what it has been used for, the deal is even better. We needed a camera that could be simple to use, has clear resolution and has some memory. This camera was going to be used as an ebay exclusive camera. We decided to sell some items on ebay and needed a digital camera to upload images to the site. This Sony Cyber-Shot fit the bill perfectly.
It came with a huge instruction manual, over 100 pages, but was easy to figure out without reading. Just spend some time using the camera and it will explain itself. It has so many bells and whistles and gadgets (including precision 3X zoom, MPEG movie EX mode, Clip Motion, and 1.3 mega pixels CCD) that you could spend forever learning it. But if you just want to take some good quality pics to load onto ebay, this camera will do fine.
We have sold (on ebay) items as small as a quarter and with extreme detail and this camera shows everything without any blurring or discoloring of the picture. Its resolution is very high and good for an entry level camera. You could easily spend hundreds and hundreds of dollars more to get a digital camera but if all you want is one for a few pics on ebay, this is as good as you can get for the money.
I wouldn't suggest using this camera as an everyday camera, or one that you use as your sole photographing tool while on vacations or having fun, it isn't made for that. Its specific job is for taking pictures of up close and still items. It isn't best for 'in motion' pictures because it takes a few seconds in between pictures to recharge the flash and ability to shoot a new picture. This is very annoying if you are trying to get a picture of people or anything moving (animals, sporting event, UFO?) but it doesn't affect the ability to photograph still images; and that is what this camera does best.
Another interesting nugget of information about this camera is that you can buy it on ebay currently for under $50. (Not my personal Cyber-Shot, I am keeping mine, but under $50 is the current going price for the camera online.) As with all electronics, as soon as the newest version comes out, the older model is 'clearanced' because everybody wants the newest shiny thing out there. This is great news for people wanting a great camera because there is nothing wrong with this model. If you just want an ebay-only digital camera, I would strongly urge you to pick up a Sony DSC P20 Cyber-Shot, you won't regret it.
