Product Overview:
The first this that caught my eye on this Sony is the compact and elegant design. Weighing in at less than 14 ounces this Handycam can really be taken anywhere. It will easily fit in one of my coat pockets, and could easily slide into a medium sized purse. I have always found it to be a pain when I have to take my eyes off of the shot to hunt for a control, and that is not a problem with this camcorder. The controls all are placed intuitively allowing for easy access while recording. Also all of the menus are accessible with the touch LCD screen; something that Sony has found to be a top selling point with their camcorders. I found this especially important with this Handycam because unfortunately it lacks an optical image stabilizer. One feature that does work very well is a great infrared night shot.
The DCR-SR85 comes with a great deal of storage at 60GB and can be expanded by adding memory sticks. Changing recording quality will allow for various lengths of video recording. Even recording at this camera's highest quality it is more space then you'll ever need in a single outing. Unfortunately the standard definition quality of this camcorder is just that; standard. While it isn't awful, it just isn't great. The quality is adequate for sharing on the computer or watching on a medium sized standard definition television. Just make sure your expectations are in line with the product's abilities.
Product Value:
Priced at around $450 at most online retailers as well as major electronics stores the DCR-SR85 is in a higher price range for its class. With a little bit of shopping around it wouldn't cost considerably more for a HD digital camcorder. You will likely be sacrifice storage space, and the touch enabled LCD however the higher quality video (and possibly image stabilization) just may be worth it. The Sony Handycam DCR-SR85 digital camcorder is likely to experience some price reductions during this holiday season for Sony to stay competitive.
