Sony Movie Release, December 21: Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story

Wendy Dawn
Columbia Pictures will release Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story December 21, 2007. Walk Hard follows the fictitious life of a rock and roll star Dewey Cox. It is supposed to be a humorous story of the ups and downs of life as a musician. It looks like a twisted mix between the life of Elvis and Johnny Cash. It also looks about as appealing as any movie we have come to expect from Judd Apatow. Apatow brought us the offbeat, slanderous humor in Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, and Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy.

There is a market for this type of insensitive comedy that takes a casual look at pop culture. In the case of Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story it is a humorous look at a rock stars life from woman to woman, with kids scattered all over the place, and drugs common place. Perhaps the intended parody is to get the audience to come to terms with issues in pop culture. However, in my opinion, Apatow has produced movies that appeal to movie-goers who aren't exactly looking for subplots. I have yet to hear an intellectual discussion of Talladega Nights or The Anchorman.

Quite the contrary, the movies of the past seemed to have appealed to juveniles, and adult juveniles in grown men's bodies. Walk Hard looks like it is going to be just as shallow as the previous movies. Where is the humor in illegitimate children, a celebration of drugs, and illegitimate children?

I'm sure this comes across as prudish. I enjoy jokes, sarcasm, and irony. I can laugh at life and even myself. I can even take jokes about my own lifestyle and beliefs. What I can't take are these pointless movies with humorless, slapstick, mockery of society.

Perhaps you find innocent escapism in such movies as Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story. When I sit down in front of a movie like the only thing I want to escape is the theater. I don't appreciate the degrading humor, the sexual undertones, blatant sexuality, and insensitivity to the battles that people actually face in life and in the pursuit of their dreams.

The trailers, music, and snippets I have seen of this movie irritate me. I think it is a weak waste of talent and time. No, I haven't seen it. So, if I were you, I would take this review with a grain of salt. I will watch it, if for no other reason than to confirm my instincts on this one.

Sony can do so much better. Why must they continue to distribute and underwrite trashy, boring, drivel as presented in Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story?

I for one am looking forward to this movie. Judd Apatow's movies may seem crude in some ways, but there is a big heart and intelligence behind them.

    You have piqued my interest!

Great review, but this movie feels too much like Taledega Nights. I would feel like I was watching the same movie only with different circumstances.
