With only a matter of weeks to go before the Play Station 3 finally arrives in PAL territories after a months-long hiatus, retailers in these regions are beginning to show signs of slowing demand for the PS3 compared to the Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) Xbox 360 and Nintendo (Pink Sheets: NTDOY) Wii at similar time points in their rollout schedules.
In fact, Gameworld Network reports that "After the embarrassment of having lots of stock left on the shelves in America, if the early pre-order stakes are anything to go by then the situation is set to be much of the same in Europe as well."
Indeed, the British division of online retailer Amazon.com apparently still has allocations remaining in its queue for pre-ordering the PS3, despite starting the process more than a week ago. By comparison, the Wii sold out of all of its pre-order allocations last year in less than 7 minutes. The year before, allocations of the Xbox 360 went nearly as fast.
Even PS3 pre-orders at Play.com are doing no better. According to the retailer's website, the button to "buy" is scheduled to disappear upon the sale of their entire pre-order allocation - yet the same Gameworld Network report states that "the button is still there and very clickable."
The result: we all have to wonder now what's going on in Europe. There are plenty of questions we must ask ourselves now: Is the PS3 just too darn expensive? Have too many people already spent too much mony on Wii consoles at Christmas? Have the guys over at Sony allocated many more PS3 units to Europe than any of us expected?
Or worse still, do people just not buy into the Sony philosophy any more? Trust me, we'll all find out soon enough. For now, keep an eye on this one: it's going to be a long ride to the end.

Post a CommentPS3 *will* overtake the Wii & XBOX 360 sale numbers, but it may not happen in a few years. But it *will* happen!
The PS3's are in ample supply. Pre-orders are slow. wii60 has already won the rat race. Game over.
I cant wait!!!!!!! ps3 here soon woohoo
All I can say is I own both the 360 and the PS3. I like both of them, and they are both great consoles. The 360 right now seems friendlier for online gaming. The PS3 seems to have better graphics capability and the Blu-Ray player is fantastic. High Def Blu-Ray movies look incredible and will spoil you for watching standard def DVDs.
I'm on my 2nd 360, due to a little defect called Red Ring of Death" They sent me back a refurbished machine after I waited a month to get it repaired. I still get weird break-ups in graphics online, and it still runs very hot.
Both machines are expensive, but its the price you pay for premium consoles nowadays.
You can't expect to get the kind of game processing for the old 90's price of the original PS2 or orginal X-Box.
To me, the PS3 is a bargain when you add in the Blu-Ray player. It is a great Blu-Ray player and considering the price of High Def players, makes it a bargain! I just bought the remote, and that REALLY turns it into a fantastic mac
I'm not a fanboy but this article is pretty week. I own a 360 and know the only reason it sold out on pre-orders was because there were not that many, same with the Wii. Sony are making a million available just for Europe on release day. I have had to buy 2 360's due to braking down (red light crap and out of warranty). I wish people would stop hoping Sony fail. Only idiots don't realize that competition is essential for gaming to get better.
this article is rubbish. i will end up with both consoles anyway and so will most people. its like an argument in a school yard. http://www.pro-g.co.uk/news/21-02-2007-4835.html
No one cares about the PS3 anymore, just like Sony didn`t care about Europe and left us till last to role out there new toy, unfortuntaly there new toy is now already old and still more expensive than in the US or Japan.... sony sucks....
wat a total jackass
too many playstation fan boys in here....
I cant believe how biased that article was i mean WOW! All the article tells me is that sony are keeping up with demand! Does knowone realise that X-box 360 was exactly the same!! for gods sake it has hardly been a rare console to find or get hold of but apparently is more succesful according to fan boys, hey you started in 2005. Get a grip, the ps3 is the next gen console and undoubtobly the most powerfull. The ps3's first gen games are as graphically superior to the X-box,s second gen games, so just wait for sonys second gen games and their blue ray capability. Come on, on paper X-Box has allready ran the race.
