Sony Playstation "Move"

On March 10th, the Playstation Move introduced its official name at the 2010 Game Developers Conference in San Francisco.

As a competitive response to the Nintendo Wii, it takes the similar form of the hand held wand controller that detects motion and movement and translates it to the screen. However, it's modifications include a three-axis gyroscope (a device used to maintain or measure orientation), a three-axis accelerometer, and "a magnetic field sensor" that works with the "Playstation Eye Camera" to provide more motion and spatial accuracy for screen movements. Furthermore, the colored and illuminated spheres attached to the controller are used by the camera. First, the camera will "pinpont the location of the controller by first detecting the dominant color of the room's background" then set the sphere to a different color so that it can be read; that way the camera can track the motions of the swings, punches, and strokes for the games. It also has regular controller buttons for shooting games that require the player to pull the trigger.

From examiner.com, it expressed how this new controller aims to satisfy what players want in interactive games: realistic accuracy. "Accuracy is crucial for hardcore players because they want their commands conveyed instantly to the game. If the system is misinterpreting the player intent because of a bad interface, traditional gamers will get upset. The same issue is in play with immediacy; if there's too much input lag or latency, hardcore gamers will get frustrated."

While Sony prides its new product of being on the forefront of technological and spatial accuracy, there is still some sentiment regarding the lack of originality. MTV Multiplayer appreciates the form/shape of the controller, saying that it is "much more natural to hold" than the Wii-mote, but that PS Move hasn't differentiated itself enough to be considered new and formidable making it difficult for consumers to have a brand new experience.

Playstation has announced three different ways in which the Playstation Move will be bundled: the starter kit will include a PS Move controller, the Playstation Eye Camera and a game; the stand-only controllers for those who already own the Playstation Eye; or the full Playstation 3 console pack, the PS Move wands, and the Playstation Eye. Although there is no definite price, according to the Sony Computer Entertainment America's Senior Vice President of Marketing, Peter Dille, the starter pack should cost less than $100.

New games that are expected to embrace the PS Move are "Sports Champions" which feature sports such as "archery, futuristic table tennis, and Roman Empire style Gladiator combat". However, existing titles that are to be expected include video games such as LittleBigPlanet and the upcoming games of SOCOM 4 and EA's Tiger Woods 2010

Sometimes I pretend I'm living in a Sofia Coppola film. A little dreary, a little pretty.  View profile
