Sony unveiled last Tuesday the company's next generation DVD/CD dual format recordable drives. Sony's new recordable drives come in three models: DRU-840A, DRX-840U, DRX-S70U, all with different designs. Sony claims that their new dvd drives delivers the industry's fastest recording speeds.

All three of Sony's new line of multi-format DVD recordable drives supports 20x DVD+R and DVD-R recording speeds which means a full 4.7 GB of DVD disc can be recorded with video, data, music or images in five minutes on a 16x DVD+R media. Sony's multi-format drives also supports recording on 8.5 GB DVD+R double/dual layer and 4.7GB DVD+RW discs at 12x speed.

The DRU-840A is an internal DVD drive that has an ATAPI interface so that it can be easily installed inside a CPU and can be replaced with a black bezel to match black colored CPUs. The DRU-840A supports 20x DVD±R, 12x DVD±R DL, 12x DVD+RW, 6x DVD-RW, and 12x DVD-RAM, 48x CD-R and 32x CD-RW recording speeds and supports dual and double layer formats.

The DRX-840U on the other hand is an external DVD drive that is designed to be space efficient and thus can be stored vertically. It connects to the CPU via USB 2.0 interface. This model also supports dual and double layer formats and has recording speeds of 20x for DVD±R, 12x for dual layer DVD±R, DVD+RW, DVD-RAM, 6x for DVD-RW, 48x for CD-R and 32x for CD-RW.

The DRX-S70U is a slim external burner that also connects via USB 2.0 interface and has recording speeds of 8x for DVD±R, 4x for dual layer DVD±R, 8x for DVD+RW, 6x for DVD-RW, 5x for DVD-RAM, and 24X for CD-R and CD-RW.

The DRU-840A and DRX-840U DVD burners will come bundled with the Nero 7 Express DVD/CD mastering software while the DRX-S70U DVD recorder will come with the full version of the Nero 7 software suite.

Sony stated that their new high speed DVD recorders are designed to provide users with optimum price and performance and that the DVD recorders would be useful for consumers who want to store home movies, digital photos and music. "Our new high speed drives are also fit for businesses deploying DVD video-based training and sharing large files, as well as for filmmakers creating prototypes on recordable/rewritable DVD discs before proceeding with mass replication," said Robert DeMoulin, marketing manager for branded storage products in Sony Electronics' IT Products Division.

The DRU840A is now available online at sonystyle.com or Sony Style Retail stores for $70. The DRX-840U and the DRX-S70U will be available next month and will cost $110, and $130, respectively.
