Sophisticated Color Combos for a Child's Room

Anni Sofferet

It seems that so many kids' room are painted in baby blue or pastel pink nowadays. But beside the lack of originality, such colors seem childish. Once the child grows, the walls must be repainted again. Instead, consider painting your kid's room with sophisticated color combos that will last from infancy through adolescence.

Analogous color combos

Different shades of the same hue are known as analogous colors. Because of their similar temperature, such color combos give a space a sense of harmony. Analogous colors also help small rooms feel larger. Create a dark contrast wall with lighter surrounding walls. For example, paint the back wall of the room in denim and the remaining walls with periwinkle blue. Or create a contrast wall in purple and add lilac all around. And compliment your sophisticated analogous color palette with bedding in the same color group.

Complimentary color combos

Colors that sit opposite each other on the decorating color wheel are known as complimentary hues. Orange and blue. Purple and yellow. Red and green. Choose one of the colors for your contrast wall, then paint the remaining walls with a paler shade of the complimentary color. For example, paint a contrast wall in blue and the remaining walls in pale orange. Or choose eggplant for the contrast wall and lime for the remaining ones. Enhance the beauty of this sophisticated kid's room color combo with accent pillows to match your accent wall, and bedding to match your paler walls.

Analogous complimentary color combos

For a richer color combo, consider painting your kid's room in three or even four shades. Establish harmony in your color palette by choosing two or three paint hues from the same color group, such as sky blue, pale sapphire and periwinkle. Then paint the contrast wall in a dark complimentary color, such as orange. Now choose one of two color combos for your bedding. If the bedding reflects the analogous colors (blues in our example), then add orange decorative pillows. Or if the bedding is bright orange, add pale contrast pillows in blues.

Trim and wall colors

Another way to add sophistication to the color combo in your kid's room is to treat the walls as a single color unit and the trim in the room as the second color unit. Then you may choose to paint the walls in analogous blues and add contrast by painting the trim in bright orange. Or you may wish to paint the room in a single shade of yellow and add sophistication with trim painted in purple.

Kids' room paint tip

To keep your paint job looking fresh for years to come, choose the best quality latex paint from your home improvement or paint store. Avoid flat finish as it will streak and scratch easily and prove difficult to wash clean. Instead paint the walls in semi-gloss finish , and choose gloss finish for your trim and doors. You may also wish to choose non-toxic paint, which will improve the quality of the indoor air in your child's room.

Now your talented child can grow up in a truly inspirational room!
