Sorry but Our ISP Does Not Support Your Operating System

J. McDaniel
I get the replacement modem, bring it home, and hook it up to my router. I then pull up Firefox and am greeted with a message telling me my operating system isn't supported. Rather confused, I call in to Comcast tech support. Yes, again. I don't know what I was thinking.

I then get told by the rep that there is no sort of redirect we can go through, my operating system isn't supported by Comcast and that is that. You use Linux, you can't use Comcast cable.

Yes, I know that is BS. But at this point my faith in Comcast has been so diminished that I buy it. Comcast now has one angry customer.

The idea occurs to me that maybe the operating system that is being referred to is the firmware on my router. This is also the first time that I've been confronted with the possibility that I don't have a dumb modem. So I directly connect my computer to the modem, and this time I get a page prompting me to download Comcast's software.

Ok, NOW I'm really pissed. The rep I spoke to didn't even check to see if I had a router connected. Of course, I've learned already that Comcast tech support for the most part don't seem to understand the meaning of passive support. That or they're told not to provide passive support, which is completely idiotic for consumer broadband.

I call back. This time I manage to get a rep that I could tell had been doing this a while. She let me rant for a bit, then proceeded with binding my MAC. Awesome. There should be more like you.
