The machine has six different nature sounds that it can play. There is ocean surf, stream, rain, white noise, summer night, and wind. My favorite of these is the rain. It really does sound like rain, which I find very relaxing when falling asleep. The white noise one is very annoying to me and keeps me awake more than anything. I find the summer night sounds to be a little distracting to falling asleep, but not unpleasant. A feature of this product that I do like is that you have the option to add new sounds by purchasing additional sound cards if you get bored of the ones you have.
The Sound Oasis Sound Therapy System has a built in timer so that you do not need to turn it off. It can run for 30, 60, or 90 minutes. The sounds will gently fade away at the end of the time period that you have specified. I like to leave mine all night because it helps me fall back asleep if I happen to wake up during the night. I have been using mine for several years now, and leaving it on all night every night, and the product is still working perfectly.
The machine plugs into an outlet, or you can run it with 4 AA batteries. I have only used the battery option once (while camping) and this worked well but I see no reason to do it nightly.
I like this product because it helps to mask sounds from the neighbors and the street. I am currently living in an apartment complex and used to have problems with the people above me waking me up. The nature sounds drown out other noises while still not being too loud to prevent me from sleeping. I bet this would be good for students living in dorm rooms or for babies who have trouble falling asleep.
The product is made of white plastic and is nice to look at. I do not mind leaving it out on my nightstand all the time.
While I do enjoy using this product, I am not sure I would buy another if this one were to break since it is so expensive. A CD of nature sounds in a regular CD player would do the same thing.
