Souperwoman

Robin Jessie-Green
You expect me to take care of the kids,

wash the dishes,

administer meds,

tend to the bushes,

make you Cream of wheat

and potato soup

In the middle of the afternoon,

I've got a million other things to do.

I never know which chore to

perform first,

do the laundry,

or make the six beds,

I don't know what's worse

Vacuuming the carpets

Or giving you head

When I agreed to "I do" and what you wanted of me

I didn't realize it meant giving up who I was meant to be

You have no interest in my having an outside life

My number one duty is serving the kids and being your wife

No Bachelor or Master degree

Has prepared me for being the disgrace of a woman that's been passing as me

You better be careful for what you wish

You keep pressuring for more of me

and another damn soup dish

You might just get what you want

Poured down your hairy back

While my ass is headed out the front

See your souperwoman heading south

Follow me with the kids and receive a lashing

of a lifetime with more than just words

from my mouth.

It wouldn't have been so bad

If for once, you acknowledged that I had more to offer

than being your live-in not so merry maid

and your docile, on call lover.

It could have been better

had just a little more attention been paid

But you spend more time out of the house than I do in.

There's only 24 hours in a day

and most of it, I'm the only parent at home with all of them.

The only time I leave home

is to chaperone little girls and boys.

Rarely am I permitted to leave the house alone

Unless it's to run errands for supplies for more chores.

A woman needs more

Even if for a little while

Some intellectual stimulation from someone other than a small child.

The worse part is

though you claim to be my man

You are far from

my number one fan.

Your refusal to see me

Is evidence enough

that we were not meant to be.

So this is my goodbye to you

Good luck with the lives of the whole crew.

You won't even realize when I'm gone

Until you take notice that soup's not on.

Great poem. Love the play on words. You can't be everything to someone else at the expense of losing your self.
