The past is dead and gone. Or so we believed, but do we as citizens of a global society, sentence to death a man whose father committed murder? If a man is convicted years after his death, we don't pass that sentence to his son or daughter. So why then, does a country striving to produce a peaceful ''rainbow'' nation dwell on its past transgressions? The entire world knows the Right Wing political government committed unspeakable atrocities, but is it necessary that the present generations and generations to come suffer the consequences? Here I can speak for the countless murdered farmers and their families who have brutally lost their lives over the past seven years or thereabouts. I have not enough fingers to count the people I know (or knew rather), who have been either mamed or murdered. It saddens me that a country so beautiful and diverse is slowly killing itself in a manner chillingly resembling Zimbabwe.
However, racism works in two directions and having moved to the Vrystaat, the age-old hatred for the blacks and the English, is still alive and well. Not that I can't see a reason for it. I can, people hate people who have violated their families and loved ones. This generation of young adults had absolutely no role in the past behavior of the government. There is no sense of unity here, but a constant, gruelling and straining political tension.
For society to function effectively, it needs to function as an organism. Each person playing their own role in keeping the infrastructure on oiled wheels. We are so busy hating each other that this cannot be possible. How long can a human body operate without a liver, or lungs? In the same way, without the separate parts of a social body functioning properly, the organism of society collapses. For example, the medical staff in our hospitals are severely depleted through financial mismanagement. An elderly lady I know, broke her hip and was admitted to hospital in Bloenfontein three days ago. She has still not been operated on and is fiftieth on the list. There was no one to perform surgery. Nice! Tentatively, i suspect this is because medical professionals are leaving the country.
So while we are busy hating each other, the system is threatening to implode. Regardless of our past, we still all have a duty and responsibilty to keep our own duties to humanity in order. Hatred does nothing for anyone, not mentally, not physically, not spiritually and certainly not socially.
Justice has its part to play, but as with anything in life...moderation is best practice.
