South Beach Diet

The None Diet

Peter Stone
When I asked the question, "How many diets are there today?" the search engine came back with "too many." By far there are some well known diets like the South Beach Diet by Arthur Agatston, MD. Dr. Agatston is an associate professor of medicine at the University of Miami School of Medicine. The diet was populated in Miami, hence the name. For those of you familiar with New York medical schools, Dr. Agatston, attended New York University School of Medicine. Before starting a "diet" it's a good idea to know something about the person authoring it. Agatston pursued his practice and research in the field of noninvasive cardiac diagnostics, Dr. Agatston's purpose for developing the South Beach Diet was preventive measures against heart attacks and stroke. The South Beach Diet: The Delicious, Doctor-Designed, Foolproof Plan for Fast and Healthy Weight Loss, Agatston's first nonacademic work, was not meant to be a diet book. In doing his research in preventive medicine, the results were the South Beach Diet, which not only improved cholesterol and insulin levels, but also helped many people lose weight. Dr. Agatston has written about seven cookbooks and eating out guides for the South Beach Diet. There is South Beach Diet online. With these written and online resources, answers to FAQ's are easy to find.

There are three phases to the diet. By far, phase 1 is the hardest. You have to seriously like eggs. Phase 1 which last 14 days has you eating eggs/egg substitutes every day for breakfast, followed by chicken, beef or fish for the other meals. If you were not a breakfast eater before the diet, getting through the first two weeks may be difficult. You'll have to find created ways to serve up those eggs.

Normally, individuals lose 1-2 lbs. a week on any diet the first two weeks. The water loss is sometimes due to fluid retention. The South Beach Diet claims you can lose 8-13lb in the first two weeks. These are definitely individual results, and not necessarily the norm. Don't be disillusioned if you don't achieve the same results. Women generally have a higher percentage of body fat than men. When losing weight, men are more likely to lose fat within the abdomen, whereas women are more likely to lose fat that resides just under the skin. With any diet, the results reached with South Beach depend on the individual.

  • Most popular diets work -- at first!
  • Both the South Beach and Atkins diets are best-selling diet books.
  • Both South Beach and Atkins diets restrict carbohydrates.
They may seem similar, but the South Beach diet is more than just a heart-friendly version of the Atkins diet.
