South Carolina Cell Phone Driving Laws: No Law is the Wrong Law

Cell Phone Usage While Driving Needs to Be Uniform

Jesse Schmitt
So I'm living in the deep south; the Low Country; Charleston South Carolina. And Charleston and the surrounding suburbs have a very strange thing going on; insane amounts of growth. In a time when the rest of the world is contracting and downsizing and sinking into the earth, the south is booming. So it goes for places which have great growth; they will experience some growing pains. One of these things is that people are no longer alone on the roads. Yes there are accidents, yes there are insane drivers on the road, and yes there are traffic jams. One of the biggest causes of car accidents in Charleston South Carolina is undoubtedly distracted driving. Number one distracting item in everyone's possession these days? Cell phones!

Cell Phones While Driving: Charleston Style: In Charleston South Carolina and elsewhere in South Carolina there is no restriction on driving and talking on your cell phone, according to dmv.org. That's one thing which has got to stop; especially with Charleston continuing to grow at such leaps and bounds. The cell phone distractions which go on today may even be okay for now but when you've got so many more people, kids, the elderly, and others out and about on the streets; especially the narrow, pedestrian streets of Old Town Charleston; you've got to cinch up the law in everyone's favor.

Cell Phones While Driving: Uniformity is Key: The legalization of cellular telephone usage while on the roads of Charleston South Carolina brings up an interesting point; anyone's driving with their cell phone on their ear and otherwise distracting them is no different here than Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, or anywhere else. The fact is that you can do real damage to another human being, their car, your car, or yourself if you are distractedly driving while talking on your cell phone. It would seem wise to do the smart thing before the dreadful happens.

Cell Phones While Driving: Tragedy Begets Action: Why does the attitude have to be that "nothing bad could happen to us," when it inevitably will. If South Carolina doesn't make sure that everyone is safe by banning cell phone usage while driving, then it's going to take the unimaginable to happen for anything to get done. While I appreciate that fewer people walk around in traffic here in Charleston and in South Carolina in general, there are many high tourist areas where the cell phone while driving could become a real problem. Plus, there's the one thing you don't even think about like your own child in your own neighborhood out in front of your house. If that's the tragedy which has to occur for people to open their eyes, then it's already far too late.

Here in Illinois, you can not even talk on a phone while driving if you are under 21. There is no texting while driving for any age, too.
