Jacob Simmons and Gentry Lee Sutherland got more than they bargained for when they returned home from a shopping spree at Wal-Mart on Sunday, June 12, 2011. The receipt that was in their bag of purchases had fallen to the floor and by the following Wednesday, bore the image of what appears to be Jesus Christ.
Simmons and Sutherland are churchgoers and have no doubts about their faith, and the receipt indeed looks as if there is some ghostly image of Jesus in the lower portion of it. It could be a good sign about the couple's upcoming marriage. Or it could just be a testament of their faith. But it could also mean something else: that Jesus would be a Wal-Mart customer if he was a mortal man on earth once again.
So what would Jesus buy at Wal-Mart? He could buy any number of things for himself or his followers, including bottled water that he can transform into the most succulent of wines. But in addition to water he might also buy:
Lava lamps. These are perfect for the outdoor gatherings when he goes into the wilderness or the desert for quiet communing with God. He could even buy one of each color, to have a different one for every day of the week.
Robes. Wal-Mart sells a wide variety of robes for men, and Jesus would not be confined to wearing just white. He could go with a nice plaid, polka dot, or a solid red or blue. There is a lot to choose from in the men's apparel department.
Sandals. Would Jesus wear modern thong sandals? Probably, and here again there are plastic , real leather, vinyl, and straw sandals. He might favor leather like the kind worn in the ancient Middle East, or Japanese style straw zori sandals.
Fish. Now that most Wal-Marts also have a grocery section, Jesus can buy fish and multiply those for his followers. There is nothing like having a good old fashioned fish fry on a Sunday afternoon, right after church services.
With purchases like that, Jesus could be a faithful weekly customer. I am sure Sam Walton would not mind that. After all, not everyone can brag about shopping at the same store that Jesus does.

Post a CommentIf you think about it, an image like that could just as easily be Charles Manson (just make the eyes more staring). It is the cultural baggage that says "Jesus or not Jesus." Now as to what Charlie Manson would buy at WalMart, I don't even want to speculate!
That could have easily been an image of any middle eastern man with a beard since none of us really knows what Jesus looked like!
