Barack Obama was able to gain a win tonight with the largest margin of victory that we have seen so far this campaign season. He was able to get huge amounts of support from the African-American community, who make up the Democratic base in South Carolina. According to CNN's exit poll, 52% percent of young non-African American voters flocked to his message of change. He won practically every voting age category except for the 65 or older category, which went to Hillary Clinton in the same exit poll.
CNN's final totals are Barack Obama with 55%, Hillary Clinton with 27%, and John Edwards with 18%. The delegate count from South Carolina has 25 going to Barack Obama, 12 to Hillary Clinton, and John Edwards with 8 delegates. Right now, this victory puts Barack Obama ahead in the total delegate count.
This victory gives Barack Obama's campaign a good boost of momentum heading into Super Tuesday. It shows that his base is diverse with people of all races willing to support his candidacy. His win in South Carolina should increase his fundraising totals because voters are more likely to give money to a candidate who they think can win.
Hillary Clinton fought extremely hard but tonight's defeat is not the death nail in her political aspirations. Her campaign still has plenty of money left and she remains a serious contender for the nomination. She is going to redouble her efforts and focus on the big states that have lots of delegates available.
South Carolina was the only state that John Edwards had a fighting chance to win because not only is he a native son but he has spent significant time and effort in that state. So this loss puts his campaign at a huge disadvantage because he still does not have any victories under his belt. His campaign plans on focusing on the smaller states, where they hope to gaining delegates one state at a time.
Barack Obama will only have a moment to savor his victory before beginning the process all over again in the rest of the country. The race for the Democratic nomination is now a national race with Super Tuesday quickly coming upon us.
