The Peachoid -The World's Largest Peach in Gaffney
Located right along Interstate 85 on the North side between Exits 90 and 92 in Gaffney, South Carolina is the Peachoid which is reputed to be the Largest Peach in the World. The Peachoid is really a water tower commissioned in 1981 by the Gaffney Board of Public Works to look like a peach to inform people that South Carolina is the biggest peach producer in the South and produces more peaches than the Peach Tree State of Georgia. The Peachoid water tower is 150 feet tall and holds 1 million gallons of water and is a great landmark roadside attraction in South Carolina.
South of the Border in South Carolina
South of the Border is statues, monuments, landmarks and roadside attractions in South Carolina all rolled up into one place. Located right along I-95 in Dillon, South Carolina just south of the border between North Carolina and South Carolina, South of the Border is famous because it advertises itself like crazy with signs and billboards along I-95 informing travelers how many more miles it is to South of the Border. Once travelers finally reach the place it's hard not to stop and waiting for visitors at South of the Border is fireworks for sale, gas stations, convenience stores, a small amusement park, a motel and many statues and landmark monuments like the 165 foot tall Sombrero Tower. South of the Border is one of the best and well known roadside attractions in the United States.
Brookgreen Gardens in Murrells Inlet
Located at 1931 Brookgreen Drive in Murrells Inlet, South Carolina is one of the finest sculpture gardens in the United States called Brookgreen Gardens. The 9,200 acre property contains over 1,400 sculptures and statues mainly by American artists including many by Anna Hyatt Huntington who with her railroad heir husband Archer Huntington created Brookgreen Gardens in the 1930's. In addition to the sculptures, statues, gardens and garden rooms the grounds also contain a small zoo, a wildlife preserve and a nature exhibition center. For more info call 800-849-1931.
General Daniel Morgan Statue in Spartanburg
Located right in Morgan Square in downtown Spartanburg is a bronze statue honoring General Daniel Morgan who was one of the true heroes of the American Revolution. Morgan decisively defeated the hated British Butcher Colonel Banastre Tarleton at the Battle of Cowpens in South Carolina in 1781. Prior to that Morgan had marched through the Maine wilderness with Benedict Arnold and attacked Quebec in late 1775 and was captured and held prisoner for 2 years. After being exchanged he and his men were instrumental in defeating the British at Saratoga in 1777. So Morgan was an officer and the commanding officer at two of the most important victories of the Revolutionary War.
UFO Welcome Center in Bowman
The UFO Welcome Center is located at 4004 Homestead Road one block north of Highway 178 in Bowman, South Carolina in the backyard of creator Jody Pendarvis. The UFO Welcome Center is a 42 foot wide flying saucer built by Pendarvis beginning in 1994 to welcome aliens and give them a place to rest after a long journey. The flying saucer is complete with a bedroom, satellite TV, air conditioning and a full bathroom. The UFO Welcome Center has become a roadside tourist attraction and curiosity in South Carolina and Pendarvis charges a fee to tour the saucer.
