Yahoo News is a good source of current events around the world, and on those rare occasions you may even find something that makes you laugh. Harriet McLeod wrote an article about a woman in Charleston, South Carolina who is currently faces charges for having plastic testicles hanging from the back of her truck.
The article, Woman Faces Trial for Fake Testicles, was very interesting to read and explains how Virginia Tice broke the South Carolina obscenity laws. Unbeknown to many individuals, many states do have obscenity laws, including swearing.
However, a lot of times it falls under the person who is finding it offensive. In the case of Tice, it happened to be a police officer, and he ticketed Tice for the offensive object. Tice is currently fighting it, but what I found so comical about the whole affair is her age, 65 years old.
Granted, that is not old, but at the same time we are talking about a woman that would be considered a senior citizen, old enough for Social Security. In a way Tice reminds me of my own Grandmother.
My Grandmother, in my opinion, was the sweetest person alive. However, you never knew what would come out of her mouth, sometimes it would be funny and sometimes it would be offensive. Yet, at that age people should take into considering the fact they are old and, in most cases, simple do not care anymore.
Yet, in Tice's case, I can not personally say I would find her decorations offensive. Perhaps if she had been younger in age, but I will say that as a mother it is not something I would want my own children seeing.
Which brings one question to my mind. Should Tice be the only one responsible or should the company that makes the offensive objects also be held accountable for breaking the law. Before answering, consider this, drugs are illegal to use and sell. If you get arrested for them, than your dealer can also be held accountable for selling. With that in mind, should objects being sold that fall under the obscenity law be legal or illegal, and if illegal should the sellers also be held accountable?
