Skateboarding Thrives in Tinley Park

Brian Ryder
Skateboarding has grown steadily in popularity since mid-1980. Once thought to be mainly for west coast enthusiasts, skateboarding has exploded across the country and the globe. As the sport has become more mainstream, a growing number of outlets to service the skateboarding culture in each region. From independently owned specialty stores to chain stores that change their inventory with the times, the availability of skateboards and skateboard-related products has increased with time.

Located in Chicago's far south suburbs, Tinley Park has been no stranger to the rise of skateboard culture. Local thrashers have spent year after year skateboarding in public domains littered with signs prohibiting the hobby. Throughout the years, a typical evening could consist of plying the trade in several outdoor locations with multiple visits from the local police.

Despite the growing derision from the police and business community, skateboarders in the south suburbs have been well served. Located next to Tinley Park, Bad Boyz Toyz in Orland Park is what one might refer to as a skateboard superstore. Carrying all brands of skateboard equipment, the local riders have a bevy of choices to suit their most intricate preferences.

Skateboarding is a sport tailor made for the outdoors. With the police presence always on alert for skateboarding in illegal areas, the desire is met with a challenge. Fortunately, the Village of Tinley Park has provided an outdoor skate park that is free of charge. Built in 2001, the skate park located in McCarthy Park features two quarter pipes and two embankment ramps facing on either side. In between is a fun box with a three-sided platform and rail going over from side to side. Across the park is a 4 foot mini-half pipe that spills into another embankment that leads to a bump rump and end with a 4 foot quarter pipe ramp.

As winter approaches, Krush Skate park provides a heated indoor space for any skateboard session, Located in an industrial park just off of 80th Avenue and Interstate 80, Krush features professionally built ramps inside a custom built warehouse, highlighted by a full featured wooden bowl that resembles the in-ground pools skated on the west coast. In addition, Krush features a full service skateboard shop.
