Southend-on-Sea: A Seaside Resort in England

Denise Larkin
Southend-on-Sea is a beautiful seaside resort in Essex, England with its long pier of three kilometres and its glorious seafront to enjoy. It has 7 miles of seafront that has surprisingly some great beaches to relax on and stroll along. Southend-on-Sea has some great awards too. It has three Blue Flag Awards and seven Quality Coast Awards that gives it one of the cleanest stretches of seasides in the United Kingdom.
Southend-on-Sea takes its name from its location at the "South End" of Prittlewell in the 18th century. Prittlewell was the original local settlement, featuring the Doomesday Book.

Southend-on-Sea is around an hour drive from London and is close to the A13 dual carriage, which is a straight road through to Southend-on-Sea from London. Taking a visit to Southend-on-Sea with friends or family can be an ideal get away, whether it is for a day out or a long weekend break.

When my children were younger, we would take family days out to Southend-on-Sea. I remember my sons going on many fast rides in Adventure Island and then buying them candy floss at the end of the day. A visit to Southend-on-Sea for leisurely walks along the seafront is even a great day out if you just want some fresh air.

What is there to See and Do?

There are many activities to do and places to see in Southend-on-Sea. Explore the pier with its many rides at Adventure Island and the amusements or visit Southend-on-Sea Casino, or explore some of the water sports that take place on the seafront. There is, also, the Beecroft Art Galary to explore showing around 2,000 works of art.

There is the Cliff's Pavillion, which is a theatre, showing live performances and is Southend-on-Sea's leading concert halls for musicals, plays, ballet and more.

Take a visit to Southend-on-Sea and use Cliff Lift, which is very historic. It has recently been renovated to the 1912 original format. The Cliff Lift is a brilliant way to get to the seafront from the High Street and also gives magnificent views by using it.

There are a few museums in Southend-on-Sea. One of them called the Southend-on-Sea Pier Museum gives a historic view of Southend-on-Sea's Pier. Another museum that can be visited is Southchurch Hall Museum, which is a 13th-14thcentury timber-framed manor house with Tudor additions. There are period room settings from the Middle Ages to the 19th century. There is, also, the Southend Planetarium and the Central Museum and Planetarium that can be visited any day of the week. Another museum is the Prittlewell Priory Museum that is a 12th century priory housing museum. A communications display can be seen here too.

Shopping in Southend is another way to spend a day there. Southend has a central High Street with two different covered shopping areas. These are The Royals and the Victoria Shopping Centre. These shopping areas are equipped with lots of different kind of shops and stores. It is a great place to shop too.

I never made it to Southend-on-Sea. We usually ended up visiting Norfolk beaches such as Hunstanton or Great Yarmouth.
