Southwest Style Design Tips

What do you think of when you hear Southwest style? Most people may think of the color teal and Western furnishings. Southwest doesn't have to be so basic. You can create a southwestern style all your own. First you may want to start off with nature inspired furnishings and some Southwest accessories. Earth tones and fresco finished walls can bring warmth to your design.

Your Southwest design can be about texture. Bring some wrought iron, brick, or other items of texture into your home. You don't have to go with the basic terra cotta pots or turquoise colored paints. Instead, you may want to try a more subtle approach. Try some natural green tones, soft or golden yellows. Slip a little Spanish furniture or contemporary pieces in your design. Great pieces that mix together form a simple and earthy look.

Most people may think of Native American patterns in turquoise, peach, or terra cotta colors. Another idea would be to try textural patterns like old doors used as tables or fabrics with a textural feel. Rugged old wooden furniture and handcrafted accessories are always of good use in southwest design.

Hand painted tiles can add a creative touch to a southwest design. You could even try a glaze on the walls in multicolored shades of earth tones. Stone and glass are another textural choice to boost a southwest design. Great southwest art is an excellent way to set off the room.

Using textiles like woven fabrics, leather, or suede are great for upholstery. You can hang striped serapes or colorful wool shawls on the wall for unique wall decorations. Knotty pine is a popular wooden feature in furniture which can be distressed and embellished with metal accents. Adding plants and a water feature to your room is another great way to spruce up the design.

Architectural features are a big part of the southwestern style. Exposing beams in your home can be functional and beautiful. Niches are another important architectural element. They can work well for storage, displaying, or extra seating. Southwestern should have accessories and furnishing that go with a very decorative wall finish that help the room flow with texture and style. Remember that this style is uncluttered and should bring a relaxing environment to your home. Some colors to choose from would be sage greens, neutral browns, fiery chilly pepper red, golden yellows, or taos blues. Southwest design is a vibrant, ancient, or nature inspired style that adds warmth and character to your home.
