Soy Joy Health Bars - Not a Joy

These Are Health Bars with Fresh Fruit but Lacking in Appeal Flavor Wise

Susan Antonelli
I'm a big fan of health bars, I feel if I"m going to snack it should be a healthy snack and I can't carry apples or oranges around with me. A health bar is easy to stick in my pocketbook, pocket or even leave in the car. We used to do a car trip to and from Florida every year and health bars travelled nicely. Now, we fly back and forth and they come in just as handy. Food on a plane is not always great or friendly. or enough and if there's a dealy a health bar can come in real handy.

I read about Soy Joy Health bars in a magazine. They were touted as being revolutionary since they consisted of real sweet, dried fruit, Mangos, raisens,, almonds, coconut, berries. It all pretty sounded good. I decided to check out the site and came across an offer for a sampling and emailed in. My Soy Joy bars arrived soon after that.. I recieved a package with a sample of three of the flavors, Mango Coconut, Berries and Raisen Almond. I love Mango so I went for the Mango Coconut first. These are small dense bars with no frosting of any kind. The taste of this health bar had a definite hint of Mango but not enough in my opinion, I didn't get the Coconut flavor at all and there was a soy aftertaste that was very unpleasant.

The Soy Joy Bar measures 4" x 3/4" and are darker on top. The samples I received came with a $5.00 coupon towards 10 more bars which was very generous of the company. Looking at the bars you can see the chunks of dried fruit and when tasting you taste the raisens in the Raisen Almond bar. For me the Berries flavor was the best of the three and had no aftertaste of Soy. Like the other bars ,you could see the fruit. All three bars were pretty similar in consistency. The berries in the Berries bar are the Goji berry, Wolfberry and Hawthorne berry. I've never heard of any of these berries and I didn't taste any new , different flavor. This bar had a sort of date nut bread feel to it without the dates. All three bars that I tried talked about crunchy almonds I didn't find any of them very crunchy. The bars were more chewy in consistency than anything else. They also offer an Apple bar which I will try. It has walnuts in it but I'm guessing it's going to be pretty similar to the rest of them

Soy is the hot button in this health bar. Soy is a superfood good for heart health and bone health. It's a hot topic in the menopause area. It's low in saturated fats and contains nine essential amino acids and is nutrient dense. Adding Soy to a product makes it desirable to a whole new market in the health area, particularly women of age.

Each bar is 130 to 140 calories, 4 grams of protein, Gluten Free and contains 4 grams of fat. So, health wise, they are certainly a decent choice. Obviously ,not good for those who are soy intolerant. One bar is 30 grams as a serving size. It gives you 50 calories from fat. It gives you 11 grams of sugar and 3 grams of dietary fiber. Total carbohydtrate count is 14 grams. Cholesterol is 15 grams, sodium 40 grams. These bars have no trans fats. I always read all this when I'm checking out a health bar. I usually go for more protein and more fiber.

Choosing a health bar is definitely a matter of individual taste. Something I find atrocious might be someone else's cup of tea.I don't eat these as part of a diet but more as part of a healthy support system. Personally my favaorites are still Nature's Choice which has no preservatives, real fruit filling, is wheat free, has no artificial flavors and has low sodium. It's very low in fiber and high in sugar with only 1 gram of protein so it isn't all that healthy compared to the others I've tried, I just like the texture and taste. My new all time favorite is the South Beach DIet Sweet Nut Creations Nut Medley which I wrote about previously. It has 150 calories but 6 grams of protein. It's 1 point lower in fiber but I'll give that up for the flavor which for me, is 100% better than Soy Joy and the texture which is much crunchier.

If you're using health bars as a dietary supplement, read all the ingredients first. Decide what your goals and needs are and do a tasting, there are so many choices on the market. Go to the different sites for coupons to save you money while you're seraching for the right health bar for you.

I really like Soy Joy bars. They have a cookie like texture that I find appealing. The fact that they are baked adds more interest to the taste and texture. I don't taste any odd or bad after taste at all. I only wish they were a little cheaper :-).

South Beach Bars, on the other hand, I think are disgusting. Too artificially sweet for me.

For goodness sake! Taste is all just a matter of opinion, and you are totally ruining the SoyJoy reputation! Just because you don't like it, doesn't mean you nave to write about it like no one else will. Personally, I love these bars. I think they taste amazing.

I'm with Fred. And not only should you learn to spell raisin, but also "received". Writers should know better.

I think these bars taste great and I like Luna bars too...so I guess the best advice is just to buy one or get a sample before you splurge on a bunch of these.

I LOVE SOYJOY! I think they taste great and they actually curb my hunger. It is great to know I can have something fast and still be healthy, lots of bars advertise this but their sugar/calorie/fat/sodium count is way off. SOYJOY is my new fave buy...thus far my favorite tasting one is Strawberry..and I'm not a big strawberry fan..but it is good.

I love Soy Joy bars. They taste good and I didn't notice an after taste. They are not sweet like the candy bar tasting health bars, they taste more like cookies to me.
