Our typical regimen includes giving him the highest allowable dosage of Benadryl caplets, bathing him with oatmeal shampoo, spraying on an anti-itch, oatmeal topical, and sometimes a trip to the vet for a steroid injection (usually cortisone).
This year was no different. Bailey developed an awful hot spot right at the base of his tail. When we'd exhausted all the other treatments, I decided to search for a new shampoo that might help alleviate his itching.
I found the Spa Diggity Dog Neem & Aloe Shampoo Bar at a local dog boutique in Orlando. The bar costs $12 online.
I was hesitant to buy a bar of soap, as I worried it wouldn't lather up enough to efficiently wash a 50-pound dog.
However, I've been pleasantly surprised with the results! I've used the bar two times to bathe Bailey, and his itching has decreased to almost nothing. His coat has felt extremely soft, and the bar leaves him with a fresh scent that is not overpowering like some dog shampoo.
The bar claims to work, in part, due to the ingredient Neem, "a tropical evergreen". Neem is a natural, non-toxic vegetable oil with excellent wound- and skin-healing properties. Proponents claim it has a mild desensitizing quality that can alleviate some of the itching and discomfort associated with skin conditions.
Other ingredients include coconut oil, aloe vera gel and sea salt. The bar is 100 percent natural, chemical free and environmentally friendly.
The bar is not available at large chain pet stores. Visit Spa Diggity Dog online for a list of retail locations, or you can also order directly online.
While I don't know specifically what causes Bailey's allergies, I am certain his itching has decreased considerably due to using the new shampoo bar.
