Spa Safety Tips for Pregnant Women

R. Elizabeth C. Kitchen

Pregnancy can be hard on the body and a little pampering may be just what the doctor ordered to help you feel a little better. However, not all spas or spa services are right for pregnant women. It is important to know what you can do and what you cannot do when it comes to the spa when you are pregnant so that you can get pampered and stay safe.

Not All Spas are Created Equal

Not all spas will have services for pregnant women, but some spas will have services specifically for pregnant women. It is important to find a spa that can perform techniques and that uses products that are safe and designed specifically for pregnant women. Certain products and techniques used in spas can actually be dangerous to pregnant to pregnant women so this is very important. Talk to your doctor to determine if any specific spa services should be avoided by you. When you are going for a massage, for example, you will want a prenatal massage. This type of massage uses a specialized technique for pregnant women.

What You Should Avoid When Pregnant

Anything that raises your body temperature is completely off limits when you are pregnant. This includes hot tubs, wraps and saunas.

You cannot safely use all essential oils. Then, during pregnancy you may simply be more sensitive to smells that you normally would be so essential oils may be uncomfortable for you. Or, it may be just certain scents that bother you. Not all essential oils are bad for pregnant women, so talk to your doctor and just be aware about how certain scents are affecting you.

Your skin may become more sensitive during pregnancy. This could cause a normal facial to go horribly wrong. For example, some of the things used during the facial may actually sting or burn, instead of soothe due to increased sensitivity. It is recommended that if you want a facial that you have the person doing it do a test section on your face first before covering your entire face to see how your skin reacts. It is better to be safe than sorry.

Talk to your doctor about different teas before heading to the spa. Certain herbs are not safe for pregnant women and if you have certain pregnancy-related conditions you may not be able to have caffeine and many teas do contain caffeine. Once you get the word from your doctor, make sure the people at the spa know what you can and cannot have when it comes to teas.
