Spam: The Other Meat!

Kirsten Barker
Being born and raised in Hawaii has really been great. One way we are different and unique, I think, may be our love of SPAM. That's right, Spam. I never realized until I was in my late teens that maybe spam wasn't the best item to ever grace a grocery store aisle. In Hawaii, we have this love for Spam Musubi, which is sticky rice with a nice fat slice of cooked spam on top, wrapped with Nori (seaweed Paper). A great snack for people on the go. Kids love it at all the local sports games and it is a popular Picnic Item as well. I even know a couple that loves to go to Las Vegas and it is their tradition to always pack about six Spam Musubi's into a brown paper bag for the airplane ride. Seriously they go about 4 times a year. Forget the Spam and they might as well just turn around and go home.

The best breakfast is two scoops of rice and three nice slices of pan fried Spam with some scrambled eggs. It is so ONO (Yummy). Now the day I recall that spam wasn't like a normal item for people to always have on hand, was when I went to my friends house for a Sushi rolling party. You get all the fixin's like Raw Ahi, Some Ogo, and lots of Sticky Rice plus the Nori. Now naturally in Hawaii if you have lots of sticky rice and Nori, your going to fry up some spam and make a couple Musubi's too. My friends boyfriend was from the Mainland and he made a funny face when we got ready for the good stuff, kind of like a distasteful face. I couldn't believe it. He made it sound like, Gross. OK, I knew spam was odd stuff but I had never seen it treated in this manner. Well least too say he passed on the Spam and I ate enough for the both of us.

They even have different varieties now, like spicy and low sodium, even Turkey Spam. I will stock up on spam just as I would any other staple in my cupboards. I don't eat it all the time (as I don't think it's the best for you, everything in moderation) but when I want spam and eggs, I shall have Spam and Eggs.
