Speaking in Tongues Doesn't Save You

Amanda Kidd
Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, for man's anger does not bring forth the Holy life God desires. Tongues is a spiritual gift that wasn't given to all Christians, as 1 Cor. 12 states. In fact, many spiritual leaders preach and teach classes on tongues as if God's gifts are conventional talents or trades to master. This is counterfeit tongues. Some Christians sincerely believe that when filled with God's Holy Spirit, tongues is the only sign of true salvation. This is false Christianity. Many believe this teaching based on Acts 2:4, when the Holy Spirit came in the evidence of tongues. God simply gave them proof of his existence and power by allowing people of different ethnicities, testify to each other by speaking in their languages, because tongues is a language gift exercised for unbelievers. The Greek word is glossa which means the tongue or language.

The Holy Spirit lives within our hearts daily. It's God's spirit opposed to a language. Certainly this would mean Christians speak in tongues daily as proof of God's Holy presence and our salvation. This is ludicrous. 1 Cor. states we should desire to prophesy instead of speaking in tongues because prophecy is for believers. The Bible demonstrates a need for mercy and grace through faith to save us. The Bible doesn't record Jesus or other anointed disciples or apostles speaking in tongues. Jesus promised us God's Holy Spirit as our Comforter and Counselor until His second coming. He never stated God's spirit must be manifested through tongues. The Word states, "The tongue should not be used in the church unless there is an interpreter to edify the church." Christians must receive knowledge or revelation of what's being stated. 1 Cor. 14, gifts of prophecy and tongues, clarifies spiritual blindness, false teaching, and preaching about tongues. The Bible also warns us to avoid bad company; this corrupts our characters, and never conform to ignorance. God will never allow man to orchestrate His will or plans of salvation, for man plans his course, but God determines His steps. Amen
