Spear Fishing Can Help You Survive Until Help Arrives

Being in a survival situation can be terrifying, especially if you don't have the knowledge or experience that will help you survive in such a case. The main problem is finding a constant supply of food and water until rescue comes, and it can be the hardest part of the experience, but there are ways in which you can get food to avoid starvation.

If you get lost in a place with abundance of water it is a blessing. Not only because of the water itself, but also because it is very likely that there are fish too. If you don't have fishing equipment, you can use a simple sharpened stick of wood as a spear and fish with it. Spear fishing has been around for thousands of years, so you might still have a little experience stored in your genes.

The most common way to fish using a spear is to stand still in a small pool of water and wait for a fish to pass close to you and then attack to catch it. It seems easy, but is much harder than it looks, so be persistent if you fail in your early attempts. Try to find a good spot for this. From outside, look closely at the water to devise any fish. Once you find an area with enough fish you need to choose a spot where the water is no deeper that a couple feet. This is because if the water is too deep, your movements become slow and clumsy and you will need to move fast in order to catch fish.

Then it is all about patience. Do not move for a while, or otherwise the fish will be scared away and you will never get them in the attack zone. Once a fish comes near you there is no time for doubt. You need to strike as fast and hard as you can, or you will end up with no fish at all and you will need to wait again for the remaining fish to ignore you.

For experienced people, there's also the option of diving with a spear and go fishing underwater. This is more dangerous and complicated but you don't have to wait for the fish to come near you. Be aware that if you decide to go spear fishing for fun and not for survival, there are regulations that you must follow to avoid fines.

Regardless of you choosing to dive or fish standing, patience will be your greatest asset. Fishing is not an easy task; especially if you are not experienced, but by practicing you will be improving your skill and eventually you'll get some food.
