Special Bible Verses for Mother's Day Cards and Letters

Personalize Your Mother's Day Card with a Verse that Says Just What Mom Means to You

In choosing the best Bible verses for Mother's Day cards or letters, two questions come to mind. What message do I want to convey to my mom? What would I want my kids to say to me? Choosing only ten Bible verses that express these thoughts proved a difficult task, as so many verses talk about the wonderful qualities of a mother. Whether writing a letter, creating your own card, or personalizing an existing card, each of my chosen Bible verses expresses a different Mother's Day message.

1.) Deuteronomy 6:7
"Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up."

If you were raised in a Christian home, the Biblical knowledge that your mother implanted in you was probably her most valuable gift. This Bible verse is a command from God to teach His ways to our children. If your mother did this for you, include this verse in your Mother's Day card with a note that says how important this simple act is in your life. Personalize it by recounting some of the ways she did this in her everyday actions. Perhaps she used a trip to the zoo to teach you about God's creation and creativity, or a trip to the science fair to explain that He is a God of order.

2.) Proverb 17:6
"Children's children are a crown to the aged,
and parents are the pride of their children."

With the increase in children being raised by their grandparents, the inclusion of this verse seems appropriate. Even if you weren't raised by your grandmother, it is still a good idea to remember her on Mother's Day. This Bible verse is perfect to send to your mother if you have children of your own, as it expresses her worth as both a grandmother and a mother. Personalize the card by telling her a few of the ways you are proud of her.

3.) Luke 2:19"But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart."
Luke 2:51b"But his mother treasured all these things in her heart."

Twice in the second chapter of Luke we are told that Mary, the mother of Jesus, "treasured these things in her heart." As a mother, I assure you that your mother has many treasured memories from your childhood. My children are far from the example that Jesus lived, yet there are many things in their lives that I have "pondered in my heart," gleaning Spiritual truths by reflecting on their lives. Personalize your Mother's Day card by sharing some of the fond memories you have of your mother and the lessons you have learned by pondering her life.

4.) 1 Corinthians 13:4-8a
"Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails."

A simple "thanks for showing this kind of love" can personalize any Mother's Day card. A letter expressing how your mom displayed each of these facets of love may be the best Mother's Day present she ever receives. Thank her for the time you pushed the limits and she still showed patience, or the time she trusted you even after you had broken that trust. Remind her that it is because of her example that you strive to live by the Bible's definition of love.

5.) 1 Corinthians 13:13
"And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love."

Your childhood days may be over and the physical distance between you and your mother may be great, but the lessons of your childhood, and especially the love between you, is still there. Perhaps you now take care of your mother and you see the end is near. These three still remain, held together by the bond of love between you. In any situation, use this Bible verse to encourage your mother on Mother's Day by personalizing your message with what faith, hope and love mean to you or how she expresses them.

6.) Galatians 5:22-23
"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law."

Personalize your Mother's Day card with examples of how your mother demonstrated each of the character traits in this Bible verse. How has her faithfulness and self-control changed how you live your life today? You may even be able to think of a time when these character traits took precedence over a family rule, proving the last part of verse 23.

7.) Ephesians 3:16-19
"I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge - that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God."

These Bible verses are a wonderful prayer for any loved one any time of the year. To personalize it for your Mother's Day card, rewrite it with "Mom" in place of the pronouns. "I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen Mom with power through his Spirit in her inner being, so that Christ may dwell in Mom's heart through faith....." Let her know that you pray for her regularly.

8.) Colossians 4:6
"Let your conversations be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone."

I admit I included this one because I found the verse convicting. I hope that someday my children will describe my speech as "full of grace, seasoned with salt" instead of cayenne pepper. If your mother succeeded at the command in this Bible verse, thank her and let her know how her wisdom in such conversations has been a blessing to you. Share in your Mother's Day card an example of a time that you needed the seasoning of salt that she applied with grace.

9.) 1 Peter 4:8
"Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers a multitude of sins."

Not all of us have a perfect relationship with our mother. We all have imperfect mothers and are all imperfect children. For those who live with a strained relationship with their mother, this Bible verse offers a chance for reconciliation. Whether you are a prodigal child or have a prodigal mother, use this verse to tell your Mom how much you love her in spite of your differences. Make your Mother's Day card a personalized apology, thanking her for loving you even when your behavior was unlovable.

10.) Jude 2
"Mercy, peace and love be yours in abundance."

This verse can have deep meaning for both the giver and the recipient, yet it provides an option for those who don't feel close to their mother. In a strained relationship, offering the triple blessing in this Bible verse can initiate healing and reconciliation. Any Mother's Day card can be personalized with this verse and a simple statement of how you plan to extend mercy, peace and love to her.

Using Bible verses in your Mother's Day card is a great springboard for expressing love to your mother. There are many Bible verses that depict the qualities that we love in our mothers.     What a wonderful idea Joanney! I think you did a great job of choosing these verses and loved your suggestions about using them In Mother's Day cards. My mother went to be with our Lord in 2001 at the age of 97 but I'm thinking about sending this article to my daughters, maybe I will get a card with one of these verses in it. :)
