Special Ideas for Christmas Card Messages

Kathi Downs
Have you ever spent what seemed like hours, searching for that 'special Christmas card,' with 'just the right message' in it? I have; and to make matters worse, I usually had to settle for "not quite what I wanted."

Several years ago a very special friend of mine sent me a beautiful Christmas card. She had purchased a 'blank card,' and wrote her own message on the inside. I was so impressed by the ingenuity and thoughtfulness of this act; that I now, either make my own cards on the computer, or purchase blank cards and write my own messages.

You don't have to be a writer or a poet to be able to put a personal message in the Christmas cards that you send out. These simple tips should help you to put personal messages in the Christmas cards you give out.

Christmas Card Message Tip #1
- Be able to express yourself - and with just a few words.

If you have trouble expressing yourself, just know that it is a lot easier to do so on paper, than it is with words. Sit and give yourself some thought as to what this person means to you. Even if it is a co-worker that you see everyday at work, but not socially; there is something nice that can be said in your card message.

"Merry Christmas

to one I work with everyday.

May the Peace and Joy

of this Christmas Season

go with you and yours through-out the coming year."

It is a very basic Christmas card message, but the phrase 'to one I work with everyday' gives it a personal touch that will make the card mean something to the receiver.

Christmas Card Message Tip #2
- Check out already made cards.

This is not to plagerize, or copy the work of someone else; but to get a feel as to how the words should flow. I almost can't go into a grocery store without checking out a lot of cards. You will find that a lot of times the words don't rhyme, but they do flow. A card I sent a good friend of mine last year:

"Poinsettas are red,

Ribbons are blue;

Christmas presents are expensive

so I send my love to you."

My friend loved the card. In fact she called me up, and we talked for the longest time.

Christmas Card Message Tip #3
- Write from the heart.

The Christmas card message does not have to be sentimental to be from the heart; it can be funny, but still from the heart. The person that receives the card with your personal Christmas card message, written from the heart; will know that you wrote that card with just them in mind. The card I gave my husband last year in his stocking said:

"Santa checked his list and found,

that I was nice, and not naughty.

He checked his list again and found,

That you were naughty, not nice.

So Santa decreed...

You have to wash my dishes for a week."

He laughed when he got the card, and I thought it was a success because it brought a favorable response. I didn't realize just how favorable, until a few months later when a co-worker of his called and asked me to make a card for her mother. It was then that she told me how my husband had taken the card to work, to show off.

You will have so much fun writing your own Christmas card messages. As you do this, you will find that as you are thinking about what to write in each person's card, your thoughts will remind you of what is important during the Christmas season.

Merry Christmas to you,

And Merry Christmas to me.

May peace come to us

by the powers that be.
