Special Kitty Scented Scoopable Cat Litter

Jamie Burke
Special Kitty Scented Scoopable Cat Litter has been my choice of litter for a number of years. Recently, though, I've found that it seems to be changing. We did go from one cat to seven almost overnight, so that may have a lot to do with it. For our one cat, it worked fine, but for all seven, it just doesn't seem to work well enough.

Price-wise, it is a great deal. I can buy a 28 pound box for about $7 at Wal-Mart. I also looked it up on the Wal-Mart website, since it is a Wal-Mart product, and it says that prices will vary from store to store. I guess if you live in a high cost of living area, the price will reflect that. I live in an average cost of living area, so that price isn't very bad.

The website really talks up their kitty litter. It tells you that odors are of the past and clumping isn't a problem. But from my experience, this product does nothing to contain the odors and it doesn't always clump like it should. Yes, I know with seven cats, of course I'll have a problem with odors, etc. But, I am very faithful in scooping my litter once a day. I make sure that the pans ( I have two) are clean by the time I'm finished. Also, several of my cats like to stay outside a lot, so they are not always in to use the litter pan.

The odor could be a combination of the litter and the food, which I talk about in my Special Kitty Gourmet Cat Food article. But I wanted to focus in this article on just the litter. The pans are in an extra bedroom, so they are not in the main part of the house. With this litter, I can smell the waste anywhere in the house. So, odor is not controlled very well.

I've also found that the liquid waste that gets worked to the bottom of the litter pan sticks to it. I mean scooping it up becomes a serious challenge. It breaks apart and does not want to release from the pan. It acts like a cement bonding to the pan. A lot of times, if I can't get it to come up, I have to dump the entire pan, take it outside and wash it out, then refill with all new litter. It causes unnecessary waste.

Something else that bothers me is the fact that this litter is very dusty. It used to not be that way. It says that it's made with ground clay and fragrance, but it causes such a dust cloud that I think they over ground the clay. It also tracks easily. I keep mats in front of the litter pans and most of the litter that sticks to the cats paws will drop off there. But I can walk into the bedroom, which has laminate floors, and cringe if I'm barefoot because it will be all over the floor. It just creates more work for me since I have to also sweep up the floors.

I am disappointed in how this litter has seemed to change. There are different factors, of course, that can make me not like it as well as I used to. A change in diet can affect the odor control, the number of cats we have can also affect it. I just know that I will be switching to something else, even though it may cost me more money. If you have cats, I suggest that you try the litter for yourself before making a final decision.

I have 9 cats but have used Special Kitty and have the automatic kitty litters and have never had problems until recently. I, too, have noticed a change in the formula. When they urinate it seems to not clump which sticks to the bottom and seems like cement and then can't come up, I scrap each night and sometimes can't get it up. I have four litters throughout the house and still have problems with this. This is bothersome for me. I know they changed the formula and if this is so then they need to say something on the front of the package.
