Special Sign Spotted in Hurston's Front Yard | Extreme Makeover Home Edition

The Hurston Family Left a Sign Just for Me! (...And My Community!)

Ron Masters
The Hurston Family, stars of the February 13th showing of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, have a very nice addition to their front lawn. A thank you sign.

My wife and I had travelled with friends up near the Daytona Beach speedway today, and we couldn't help but point to the west as we travelled along I95, just north of Cocoa.

"Right over there! That's where the Hurston's house is!"

Of course, it's much more difficult to locate the home without all the lights and tents and buses, so in order to satisfy my friend's curiosity of where the home was located, we decided on a little detour once we'd munched on some Red Robins burgers and did a little flea market shopping.

It was around 6:30 in the evening when we finally directed our friends through the quiet streets of Canaveral Groves and down the street that once held so many hundreds of volunteers. The last time my wife and I had been here, we'd had to park at the local dump and board a shuttle bus in order to reach the home. That all had led to an amazing adventure of volunteering. (You can find that story here.)

Tonight's visit? Much quieter.

I rolled down the passenger window and started snapping pictures. Fortunate for me, my friends said, "Don't miss the sign." Admittedly I'd been so focused on looking at the house through my camera, that I nearly missed it. I zoomed in on a small white sign flanked by two solar powered lights, took the shot, and then we drove on. It wasn't until I reviewed the picture on my camera (click on the photo at the top of this article to enlarge it), that I was able to read what the sign read:

We are so
Thankful
To our Loving Community
For This Amazing Gift.
We Have Been Overwhelmed
With Your Generosity!

With Much Love and Sincere Appreciation,
The Hurston Family

Wow. Very nice. I wasn't expecting to see something like that, but it doesn't surprise me. I had spotted a thank you ad, to the community, that the Hurstons had placed in the Florida Today newspaper, but this sign, right smack on their front lawn felt oh so personal.

It was a sign for me... and for my community. A community that came together for a common cause and goal. I got to see that. I got to help -- up close and personal. When Ty Pennington and LifeStyle Homes gave the Hurston family a new home, they changed something in me as well. I liked the excitement I felt. I enjoyed the experience of working together. I loved the look in my wife's eye as she pitched a hand and contributed.

People can choose to make a difference in someone's life. Yeah, we - You! -- really have that power. Exercised it lately?

As tomorrow's show airs, we'll be having a handful of friends over to watch and cheer.

And I'll echo - if not in my heart, then certainly out loud -- along with Ty Pennington's signature sign-off phrase:

"Welcome home, Hurston family! Welcome home."
