Specific Things Work at Home Types Can Do to Save on Heat and Energy

Lauren Todd
If you stay at home working long hours everyday, and you live alone or with a partner, following these two simple steps will save you personal energy and heat your home effectively without costing you a mint.

* Save energy by running the heat for less than two hours per day.

When you wake up in the morning, set your alarm early and then turn the thermostat to about seventy degrees both in your room, and in the office you will be working in most of the day. Individual hydronic heating systems installed in each room are well worth the small investment. The choice of individual room heaters are also highly efficient and less expensive. Turn on the heat in each room for about one to one and a half hours at the most. This will warm up these rooms pretty sufficiently because these are some of the smallest rooms in the house. Then close the door and leave it closed. In the office, just go in and out the door quickly, to save energy. This method will guarantee that the heat stays locked into the rooms that you spend the most time in. Do not run it anymore than this, because the more the time spent running the heat, the more energy used overall. Your bill will be a fraction of what it would be if you ran the heat all day on a low setting like sixty degrees or so. You will still be warm at night in your bed and during the daylight hours in your office. Save those energy bucks for you and not the electric companies CEO's private yacht club parties.

* Save your bodies energy by layering your clothes using fabrics designed for it.

Everyone knows that layering helps keep you warm, but did you know that there are particular fabrics that have been proven to be the most insulating, ( personal energy saving,) as well as comfortable and reasonably priced?

If you start your regimen with the first "wicking layer" to keep moisture out in your body and feet; opt for capilene long underwear and bamboo socks. Capilene underwear are extremely light weight and the fabric is more breathable and comfortable than cotton or polypropylene fabric but is just as warm on chilly office days around the house. If Patagonia is a bit too costly, then try zappos.com or such a site, there are often deals on this type of long underwear if you search around on the web for the lowest price. Bamboo socks are something fairly new, but they are now all over the internet. Bamboo socks are made for skiing and hiking or climbing, but are still quite breathable and have the best warmth to weight ratio and dry the quickest. These will keep you warm in the latest hours of the night, while the temperature drops another ten degrees outside your office window. Next, of course, is the middle layer. Best choice by far for indoor comfort, breathability and really good looks is a merino wool sweater. Merino wool is great for men or women. These are the lightest weight yet warmest sweaters on the market and super comfortable. Always nice paired with a cotton turtleneck underneath. If you are still a little chilly, then just top it all off with a light weight fleece jacket. Keeping warm by dressing properly saves you a lot of personal energy, especially if you have to work overtime on a weekend to get that crucial report or finish that last architectural draft by Monday morning.

Whether sleeping in bed or working at home, dressing in light layers using the most efficient fabrics, combined with locking heat in the rooms you use most is the perfect combination to keep your personal energy level high, your light bill low, and keep you warm and toasty during the days as well as those late winter nights.
