Are you tired of being turned away from local hangouts based on age, gender, race, sexual preference, religious beliefs, and/or political opinions? If so, then Spectrum Cafe is the place for you!

Spectrum Cafe is an "inclusive haven" for everyone-- regardless of all that is listed above. It is an effort for the Lynchburg area Join the Impact. This event is going to be held the second Saturday of every month, from 5:00 PM to 11:00 PM. The location is at 818 Court Street, at the First Unitarian Church fellowship hall.

The first Spectrum Cafe was held on January 10th, as an effort to include everyone in a safe, friendly environment, and to gather signatures against D.O.M.A. (Defense of Marriage Act.) To be honest, I really wasn't sure what to expect, or how comfortable I'd be, since the attendants were mostly from the LGBT community, and I, as well as the two people with me, are straight.

What I found, was amazing. Spectrum Cafe was, and is, a coffeehouse-style setting for everyone. The food was good, as was the coffee, cider, and hot cocoa. What was even better, was the conversation. I was privileged to sit at a table with some amazing people that I already knew, and some, that I was so glad to meet. It was amazing to hear stories about gay and lesbian men and women growing up in their respective towns, and how they developed their defense mechanisms against ignorant bullies. I met a lot of people that I hope to talk to, and meet up with again-- especially a fellow freelancer. This also allowed me to learn more about the LGBT community, and what I can do as a straight ally.

For those who were a little less conversational, there were games available to play, and everyone looked like they were having a great time.

Those who live in the Lynchburg area, and did not attend, should seriously think about doing so next time. Again, it matters not, who you are. Come hang out, and get to know some amazing men and women.

The next Spectrum Cafe is on February 14th-- Valentine's Day! Bring a date!

Thanks for the comments, everyone! I'd just like to say that before anyone else from the LGBT community reads this, I have already been pointed out, that the proper term is "sexual orientation" as opposed to "sexual preference." Please do bear with me, as I write more of these types of articles. I am a recently-joined ally, and am still learning.

It sounds like you really enjoyed meeting everyone and I am sure you are a good listener! I wish every town had a place like this to go to!
