Speed Up Your Computer Free

Another Rip-Off Scheme

Stephen Joltin
You as I may have gotten a solicitation to speed up your computer free. Well it is anything but free and in fact may add up to thousands of dollars and may ruin your credit rating as well. I have gotten at least five solicitations for these software vendors. Let me show you how this scheme really works.

First you receive an Email or respond to an online advertisement. This reads "increase the speed of your computer for free by correcting registry and other errors". If you go to the site it says you can run their error detection software for free just click the run button below, so far so good. You click the run buttons and after a few minutes it says you have X amount of registry errors, more file disconnect errors, even more space wasted in temporary files and a host of other problems which are slowing down your computer.

I had 456 errors in Speed Test, and up to 536 errors in similar programs sold by other companies. Some such as temporary file and even history file errors you can easily correct yourself by running Disk Cleanup in your Windows system accessories file under system tools. You generally can release your temporary internet files by shutting off your computer properly. Other problems with your registry are not so easy to fix.
The software then tells you that it will get rid of 15 or 20 errors for free by clicking the run button. However, if you want to get rid of all the errors you have to buy their product which costs $34.95 to $39.95 a year charged to your credit card each year from then on. They say this ongoing expense is necessary since they will send you updates periodically as new problems are programmed into their package.

I hit the remove 15 errors for free only and went down from 456 errors to only 441 errors. Obviously this is a typical bait and switch scheme. They keep a cookie in your system so you can't run it again for free. Unless you go into your control panel and delete the trial version you will be stuck with the extra space to store that program forever. This far outweighs any benefit from the free 15 errors it fixed for you. I went into control panel again and deleted the program.

If I had purchased the program there is no way to purchase it for a one time run. Every year thereafter you will be charged $35 to $40 and by then you won't even remember what the charge is for. They use totally different names on your charge card for billing than the name they used to sell it to you. Can you say befuddlement? In ten years you are charged $350 to $400. In twenty double that. Even if you close your credit card for some other reason you will still be charged but now since you don't even know to pay for it or terminate service you will still owe the annual charge which will make its way to a collection agency and your credit report.

The solution to this problem is not to buy a piece of software with an ongoing charge. Look in your computer store for a similar program without a yearly charge. It actually costs a similar amount. Another alternative is to go to Best Buys and let the Geek Squad clean your computer for you. The onetime charge of $35 is well worth it. Make sure you tell them to run it once and then delete the software since they are not above offering you a yearly contract to clean your system remotely for an ongoing charge.

Does the software even work? I would say yes providing it does not run daily causing its own computer slowdowns. I ran one program and just got rid of the 15 errors. Then I ran a second competitor and got rid of an additional 20 errors. My computer speed did seem to increase. I then deleted both programs to get rid of the extra storage and the sales pitch you get each time you reboot from the vestigial software left on your computer.

I just thought you might want to know.

Wow...I'm glad I didn't try any of those. Btw, I felt the same way about a Neti pot and I've heard the same thing from people for years. All I can tell you is if you get desperate enough and try it, you'll thank me, LOL! Thanks for dropping by.

Yeah, my hubby came running downstairs a few weeks ago, 'Hey, we can speed up our computer." I took one look at what he had printed out and crumpled it up.
