SpeedCommander 12.40 & JetDrive 2009 Ultimate: Software Reviews
File Management and Defragmentation Tools
SpeedCommander 12.40
SpeedCommander is part of the legendary Norton Commander and if you take note, the application has not gone through much change over the past eleven years. The classic functions, which allow you to move files back and forth, copy, sort, zip and edit will not be of much help to people who are completely new to this. Even clicking on help will not stop the confusion since everything is explained in German.
To start with there is nothing speedy about using this application since it will take a while getting used to. Files and folders are displayed in two windows, with one generally being the source and the other the target. As mentioned previously, SpeedCommander in general is not only a file management tool but also has the ability to synchronize files between two folders. Besides, the application includes a secure deletion method that is compliant to governmental standards plus there is also the option of wiping your data by overwriting it with random values.
Zipping important or large files should not be too much of a problem. With the inbuilt compression wizard you can archive folders to any one of the thirteen formats mentioned, such as-ZIP, CAB, RAR, 7z, to name a few.
JetDrive 2009 Ultimate
We all know how important it is to defragment the hard drive on a regular basis. Not doing so will not only result in slow boot time but also drastically reduces the response time of other applications. Third party applications are best suited for defragmenting such as JetDrive 2009, which does a better job than the default Windows Defragmenter.
The start center gives you access to defragment your drive, memory and registry. A solid feature is the registry defragmenter, which most other applications miss out on, but not the most important application. You also have access to a feature known as 'PreciseDefrag' that allows you to defragment multiple files in one go rather than defragging the whole drive.
Based on the test, JetDrive works ten times faster and gives an acceptable performance boost over Windows defragmenter. However, if you defragment your hard disk on a regular basis you would not quite notice this difference. Although the red-write benchmarks had slightly better results during the test, the increase in speed was not quite obvious. It benchmarks applications and measures the startup times of various other programs. The application is also a resource hog, consuming a whopping 160 GB of memory.
Also, the developers could have done away the memory defragmenting option as it simply does not boost the speed of the OS in anyway.
