There are several options, since most people are on cell phones, you could switch to a international calling plan, but this can also be expensive, and normally requires a predetermined contract length.
So the options are calling cards. This is where you can easily get confused or make a huge mistake that will provide you with few minutes and a lot of cost. Not to mention, service by many calling card services is, at best, a tad undesirable.
During the course of the past year, I have had to use calling cards for business, and schooling. I have had to make calls regularly to Russia, Canada, Thailand, and the Philippines. I was not making enough calls to lock myself into a long wireless contract, but still need to be able to make several calls a week.
I began searching for a calling card that provided good service, low rates, and was easily rechargeable. I began by searching the internet and comparing companies offering calling cards. After trying several companies, I settled on SpeedyPin.com.
I chose speedy pin.com for both their service and their easy ability to recharge when I needed to. The rates on speedy pin can appear complicated, and you will need to know several things before you choose a card that is right for you.
The first thing you will need to know is if you will be making most of your calls to a land line or to a cell phone. The rates differ by quite a bit, land lines being cheaper, and cell service more expensive.
The second thing you need to determine is what Country most of your calls will be going. In my case, I was calling several Countries, but the most calls were going to Thailand or the Philippines. Most users will be only calling a single Country, so choosing will be much less complicated.
In my case, with Asia being the most called area, and cell phones the phones called, I choose a plan that offered me the lowest rates for calling call phones in Thailand and the Philippines.
But be wary of variables in the plans, such as rounding. You may get a lower per minute rate, but your calls will be rounded up to the two minute mark, so a 1 minute call would actually count as a three minute call on your card.
Another thing to watch for is weekly charges. Some of the Speedypin.com plans charge a weekly fee as well. Be sure to look for these and avoid them if you can.
Once you have choosen the best and cheapest plan for your needs, you will need to get your account set up. At speedy pin.com it is a simple process to register. General information and a rather short form.
You will log in to your account each time you return to recharge, so you will become quite familiar with this process.
This brings me to another reason I choose speedy pin.com. I cam recharge online using a credit card or PayPal. Recharging can be set to automatic in you desire and you determine the dollar amount to both recharge your card to and the amount you want your account to drop to before you automatically recharge.
I did not choose this route, I choose speedy pin.com to notify me via email when my account drops to $5 or less. Then I can go online, and in just a very few minutes recharge my card and be able to make a call as soon as the transaction is complete.
Speedypin.com offers local numbers to call the operator which are lower rates, or they have a national 800 number, with a slightly higher rate. Always use a local number.
The last thing you have to worry about is the service in the country you are calling. In my case, calling Russia was never a problem, and the calls I made to Thailand were not much of a problem, but calling the Philippines is a real hassle.
The phone service outside metro Manila is now good, and with weather conditions, it can be near impossible to connect.
But for calling cards, ease of use, easy payments, and good service, I have found speedy pin.com to be the best available service.
