Spelling Tests: Innovative Ideas to Help Students Study

Reba M
Spelling tests are a weekly and sometimes dreaded part of almost all elementary school students' lives. Some students seem to be more naturally talented when it comes to spelling, while other students need to put in more work and effort in order to get good scores on their spelling tests. When a student is studying for a spelling test there are several things that they can do to help them remember the words. By practicing the each week's spelling words throughout the week instead of just the night before the test, a student will know how to spell more words and will also be less stressed by the studying process. Getting good grades on spelling tests should be relatively easy for students compared to all other tests because the exact questions that are going to be asked are known by the students.

First, by using repetition to help the student remember the words is really one of the only ways for the student to memorize how to spell words. If a student starts at the beginning of the week by writing each word five to ten times it will help them start to learn the words on the spelling list. Parents can give the student multiple spelling tests a week being sure to always give the words in a different order will guarantee that they really know how to spell the words. If a student misses a word then they can write it several times to affirm how to spell the words correctly.
In order to engage the student in the learning process a student can use a dry erase board and write with many colors of markers so that the process can be more fun.

Another, way for students to learn the words easier is for them to use more types of learning techniques and styles. This can be done by having the student spell the words out loud or by using flash cards so that the student can see the words displayed in a different way.
If a student cannot remember how to spell some words, there are some ways that can help them remember them other then just by memorizing the spelling of the words. If a word can be broke down into shorter easier remember pieces a student might have better luck remembering the spelling of the word. Additionally, the ways that people use to remember other material can be used with words. Including coming up with a phrase using words that start with the letter in the word.
