The cost of keeping your cat happy and healthy is on the rise. Instead of skimping on quality, use these tips to spend less on cat care while maintaining your cat in the manner to which she (and you) have become accustomed.
Spend Less on Cat Medications
Ask your veterinarian if a generic medication will work as well as a name brand drug for your cat. Any time your cat is prescribed a 'human' medication, such as antibiotics, compare prices at several pharmacies before making the purchase so you can get the lowest price.
Save Money on Kitty Litter
A constant expense a cat owner has is for the kitty litter. You know you must have it so wait for it to go on sale then buy it in bulk. Big box stores frequently have kitty litter on sale, so check the sales circulars in the Sunday paper to discover which store has the best price. Look for the coupons inserts in the Sunday paper where manufacturers often publish valuable cents off coupons on their line of cat care products, including kitty litter and cat food. Check out online coupon venues to score more money saving coupons for cat food and other cat care products.
Have Kitty Spayed
Having Kitty spayed before the six month mark obviously will prevent any more feline mouths to feed, but it will also significantly reduce your cat's risk of developing breast cancer and uterine infection. Either illness would be a major medical expense and could possibly end the life of your beloved cat.
An Ounce of Prevention
Preventing diseases and accidents will no doubt save you money on cat care. Talk with your veterinarian regarding the type of vaccinations and the frequency with which your cat needs them in order to remain healthy and disease free. Most vaccines cost around $15, one major illness could costs thousands of dollars to treat.
Prevent Kitty from having an injurious accident by keeping dangerous items out of her reach. Over-the-counter pain relievers, some houseplants, household cleaners, liquid potpourri and yarn (a piece of yarn could lodge in Kitty's intestine and require surgical removal) all pose a threat to a cat's health. Prevent a disease or an accident and you'll spend less on cat care.
