Spend Less on Groceries with These Four Tricks

Georgia Lund

Trying to feed a family is getting more expensive every week. Use these four tricks that will save you money at the grocery store and still let you feed your family healthy meals.

New Way to Buy in Bulk

Try this new approach to buying food items in bulk - you won't even need to travel to the wholesale discount club. Make a list of all the packaged food items your family devours (cereal, canned goods, chips, etc.) then talk to the store manager about buying these items by the case at a lower price. Many stores offer discounts on cases, as much as ten percent discount, as part of their store policy. You won't know until you ask.

Make it Quick

The more time you spend in the grocery store, the more money you will spend. Grocers know this and have designed the store to keep you in there longer. Beat them at there own game and save money, get out quick. Write down a list of items needed and stick to that list to avoid impulse spending. Set the timer on your cell phone for however much time it usually takes you in the store, then deduct ten minutes. When the times goes off, it's time to check out. This will help you move through the store faster, buy less and save money.

Look For Food Elsewhere

Grocery stores are not the only places where you can buy food. As a matter of fact, businesses like drugstores and dollar stores are aggressively competing for your food dollar by offering some fantastic sale prices, cash back incentives and in-store coupon savings. Check out weekly store fliers and compare prices at all types of stores and spend less on groceries.

Use Cell Phone to Spend Less

Your cell phone can help you compare prices and download cents off coupons to store cards. To compare prices on a cell phone, enter the name of the item in the search box on Google.com and you'll see the prices that many retail websites charge. Find the lowest price, show it to the store manager and ask him to match it.

Many grocery stores allow customers to download virtual coupons from their cell phone right onto their store reward cards. When the store reward card is scanned at the checkout, the coupon is applied to the item purchased. That's coupon clipping made simple and money saved.
