Spend a Weekend in Manhattan, Kansas, and the Konza Prairie Preserve

While it is not the typical outdoor vacation destination, eastern Kansas is home to some of the most beautiful prairie hikes in the world. The Konza Prairie offers a variety of trails that allow visitors to see a portion of the undisturbed Great Plains. After spending a day of hiking and sight seeing at the preserve, check out the sights in Manhattan, Kansas. Whether you are looking for a day trip or a weekend getaway, a trip the Konza Prairie and Manhattan is sure to please.

Konza Prairie - Located in the eastern Kansas, the Konza Prairie is approximately 13 square miles of preserved tall grass prairie. Visitors can experience more than 600 species of plants and dozens of animal species of all kinds. Deer, prairie chickens, butterflies, bison and more than 200 species of migratory birds are just some of the animals that call the Konza prairie home. There is even a homestead site that has been preserved. All can be explored on the park's 14 miles of hiking trails. Konza prairie is located just minutes south of Manhattan.

Manhattan, Kansas - Manhattan is the perfect base for your trip to Konza Prairie. The home of Kansas State University offers a wide range of dining and entertainment opportunities. Take a stroll through campus and downtown area to get a feel for the city.

Dining

Start your day off with breakfast at The Chef. Located at 111 S. 4th Street, this local favorite specializes in breakfast and was selected as the best in Kansas by the Food Network.

At the end of the day, grab a steak and some locally brewed beer at the Little Apple Brewing Company. Featuring Angus beef and hand crafted beers, the Little Apple offers drink and food specials.

If you are looking for a fine dining experience, try Harry's. Located in the historic Wareham Hotel, Harry's offers a nice variety of appetizers, sandwiches and entrees. Be sure to make reservations before you go.

Entertainment

There are two main places to go for entertainment in Manhattan. Aggieville is home to several bars, restaurants and shops. Catch a band over drinks or check out the Marianna Kistler Beach Museum of Art. Downtown Manhattan is the other center for entertainment. Like Aggieville, you will find a variety of shops, eateries and entertainment options.
