My small business is one that I would consider a success, mostly because I have been able to get it into the green and keep it there for some time now. As much as I would like to keep all the money that comes in through my small business I've had to find out, sometimes the hard way, that it is necessary at times to spend money on the business in order to help make money with it.
Updated Computers
This is one of my problem areas. I tend to get computers and then become attached to them. The only problem is that computers break down over time and when they do they become slower. One computer I had in particular was giving me nothing but trouble. I finally caved in and bought a $350 computer to replace it and almost as soon as I did I began to make more money.
The reason was simple; efficiency. My new computer allowed me to do things faster and more efficiently then I could on my old computer so I was able to work faster and make more money as a result. This was the perfect example for me on how time is money and I quickly made back my investment and then some.
Updated Software
Again this is tech related. Because a lot of my work is all online it is necessary for me to have certain kinds of software programs. Every once in awhile these programs will be updated for the better and when they are I am sure to buy the latest version if the updates are not available for free. Again, the more efficiently I can work, the more money I can make so I have to be certain that the software programs I need are the best available.
Office Equipment
I have a recurring back injury that I sustained a few years ago. While my chiropractor keeps the pain in check I was finding it coming back more and more. When I am in pain then my work is diminished and so too is my income.
Luckily, I have a great wife who saw fit to upgrade my office chair even though I was attempting to be tightfisted and avoid the expense. However, I'm thankful she took the initiative as I have been able to comfortably work ever since.
Stowing the Stingy
It all boils down to allowing myself to spend money. I've always been a bit stingy at heart, but with my small business I cannot afford to be. I'm not saying that everything I have for my small business has to be top of the line, but I am saying that it is necessary at times to spend money in order to make money.
