Spending Money Wisely During the Holidays
Tips and Tricks to Not Go Overboard During the Holiday Season
First of all, now is just as good a time as any to start your holiday shopping. Thanksgiving hasn't hit, and while most advertisers have already started egging on shoppers to believe that they need to start their holiday shopping now, most haven't actually done so.
This means it is a perfect time for you to start your shopping to get it out of the way so you can enjoy the holidays.
To begin with, you should always create a budget. Budgets help you map out how much money you need, allow you to avoid forgetting to get a present for someone and help you not to overspend. Your budgets should be as specific as possible. For example, write down the size, color and exact price of what you need to get. Make sure to keep this list with you whenever you go out shopping. (Either write it on a piece of paper so you won't lose it or keep it in your cell phone - whatever you need to do to keep it with you).
Attempt to pay for everything in cash. This may be difficult since most people don't start setting aside money for the holidays until the last minute. So, if you absolutely cannot pay cash for everything, make sure to keep your credit card transactions to a minimum and purchase items that can be paid off at least by the end of the holiday season (so maybe by the end of January or early February).
Also, keep in mind the fact that spending more doesn't always necessarily mean you're getting a superior gift. Look out for bargains at outlets or keep an eye out for discounts through online retailers. Many places such as Amazon.com are offering free shipping or percentages off your total if you spend a certain amount. Use these promotions to your advantage. Realize that the free shipping offers will always be for standard shipping so allow yourself some time by ordering items early.
If you do decide to do a lot of online shopping, which seems to be the easier way to do things, be very aware of return and exchange policies and account for the possibility of the receiver saying they need a different size or different color. Make sure to keep your online transaction receipts in a folder and don't throw anything away until after the holidays.
And always make sure that where you are shopping online is offering you a secure connection when putting in your credit card information. Also beware of auction sites like eBay. There's nothing wrong with buying from eBay - just make sure you know the rules and are a buying from a reputable seller so that you don't end up getting ripped off at the last minute.
Always be on the lookout for sales. A lot of time, the frequency of sales may be higher as it gets closer to Christmas, but you also have to keep in mind the frenzy that comes with it (rude shoppers, holiday parking hell and sifting through piles of merchandise that look like a hurricane came through it) - sometimes it is better to not wait and to just buy ahead of time.
All of these tips should be helpful in avoiding impulse and personal shopping. While it may be too easy to start buying up early gifts for yourself, try to practice a little self restraint because if your buying gets out of hand, you may end up with a wad of receipts and debt that will have you in tears by the end of December - and no one wants that.
