For Egypt lovers, there's no finer film choice than Sphinx, starring Frank Langella and Lesley-Ann Down. This 1981 box office sleeper has become a cult classic for those who adore the treasures of the pharoahs.

Summery: Egyptologist Erica Baron (Down) travels to Cairo to research a paper for Boston University. While interviewing an antiquities dealer, she witnesses a murder and the stealing of a priceless pharonic statue containing the cartouche of two kings. Seen by the culprits, she must flee for her life. She is arrested and befriended by the Egyptian Antiquities General, Dr. Ahmed Hassan (Langella) and together they must solve the mystery of the smuggling ring. An array of wild characters are brought into the second half to keep you on the edge of your seat discerning the good guys from the bad.

The story is carried from Cairo to Luxor and into Valley of the Kings where the plot twists and turns with intrigue.
The cinematography supurbly captures the slendor of Egypt unlike anything before it. Sphinx takes you to the Serappeum at Saqqara, Giza Plateau, Cairo's Khan-el-Khalili, inside the tombs of Luxor and more. Seasoned travellers to Egypt may recognize Erica Baron's hotel room to be that of the Nile Hilton and the cabana scene is from the historical Mena House in Giza. (Remember the pyramid backdrop at the pool?). Sphinx was shot on location and sure to bring back glorious memories of your trip to Egypt and inspire others to go there.

Fine performances from Frank Langella and Lesley-Ann Down, along with the beautiful scenery and tricky plot,
make Sphinx a movie you will want to watch over and over again. This film is out of print and not yet available on DVD, but can be purchased in VHS format from online sources. It may also be downloaded from Amazon.com.
